“...from delayed marriage...”

Depends on what age you might consider it a delayed marriage. According to the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, 70% of men and women aged 25-44 have ever been married: 71% of men and 79% of women. There is a 50% probability that women will have married for the first time by the age of 25. Not until age 27 is there a 50% probability that men will have married for the first time. And remember, this is in 2006.

According to the census, the medium age starting in 1890 was at 26 men and 22 women. and the numbers went down until the late 1950’s when it started a steady climb until it reached just over 30 (men) and 28 (women).

You mentioned no fault but there are only 17 of 50 no fault divorce states. I think it is the attitude being programmed into our kids concerning perceived and programmed gender inequality that has become a tool for another corral to put certain sheep in to be used at the voting booth at 18. And part of that is not exactly the creation of a career as trying to “catch up” with the lies they were told during their education. They are trying to make fast food the answer to their being conned.

Of course this creates a huge conflict internally, which only gets worse as "middle class" is now defined as what lower upper-class once was: the huge house or condo in an expensive location, fancy clothes, new cars every couple of years.

The biggest problem is that people are taught in school they can earn enough money to have these things by working for someone else at a job.

“The average age of marriage has been trending up, as more Americans wait longer to get married. According to 2021 statistics, the average age at which women get married is age 28.6 years. For men, the average age of marriage is 30.4 years.1

That’s an increase of nearly a decade over the past century. In 1920, the average woman got married at 21.2 years old while men married at 24.6 years of age. While men have historically gotten married later than women, the age gap between them is closing. On average, women are two years younger than men when getting married for the first time.

Only 29% of Americans age 18-34 were married in 2018, compared to 59% in 1978.2”

And it’s not so much the absolute laws around marriage, but the cultural change that occurred at the time that no-fault was first brought in. But here ya go:

” From 1867 to 1915, the divorce rate remained 1% or less (one divorce for every 1,000 population) and remained less than 2% until 1940. The first year the divorce rate exceeded 3% was in 1969, the year California became the first state to adopt no-fault divorce. The divorce rate peaked between 1979 and 1981 at 5.3 percent. Since then, the divorce rate has steadily declined along with the rate of marriage. (From 1968 to 1987, the marriage rate stayed at or above 9.9 percent. It dropped to 9.7 percent in 1988 and 1989, climbed back to 9.8 percent in 1990, and dropped steadily until 2017 where it remained at 6.9 percent.) The current divorce rate is 2.9%.”

We had three, and now have three grandkids.

The Middle, Working, and Upper classes need to have more kids. The underclass can have fewer, that’s fine.

A factor not in the article is that marriage itself in America has unquestionably declined over the recent past and is now at historic low levels for the country.

Cyndy Ranzau, a wealth strategist at RBC Wealth Management, says with societal attitudes surrounding marriage evolving, many young Americans — specifically Millennials — are taking the time to gain their financial footing.

“They’re delaying because they don’t feel financially secure themselves,” says Ranzau. “So the thought of going out on their own and being responsible for another person, and maybe starting a family and being responsible for them, feels overwhelming.”

Additionally, Alan Wolberg, senior vice president and senior wealth planner at City National Bank, says getting married when you’re older also makes more sense from a tax and estate planning perspective.

But all this is geared around a lack of economic success which I feel is mishandled in the education system with the creation of false expectations. And when the kids get out into the real world where their employers have their own expectations other than participation, the youngsters aren’t prepared for failure based upon their lack of accomplishment.

So lesser marriage amounts period may be a lack of education and how to process it.

The site you sent me was for just one of those states, California. But the first sentence in the article is very telling to me:

“Fifty years ago this summer, California implemented the first no-fault divorce statute in the nation.”

It couldn’t have been that telling if only 17 of the 50 states use it’s terminology and practices in over 50 years of availability. Not sure that no fault is a trigger.
