"Stinger" at the exit from the attack, an explosion in the air and ... That's it. "Russian public discuss the death of the pilot-general

In the sky over Ukraine, retired Major General of the Russian Air Force Kanamat Botashev was shot down and killed. Information about the death of the pilot was confirmed to the BBC by three former subordinates of Botashev, who kept in touch with him after the end of the service. They requested anonymity for personal security reasons.

Botashev is the highest-ranking pilot whose death became known . Prior to his retirement, he was the commander of an aviation regiment. The participation of such a high-ranking officer in air battles can speak both of how difficult tasks Moscow sets for military pilots, and of the lack of highly qualified specialists.

On Sunday, May 22, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that a Russian Su-25 attack aircraft was shot down in the sky over the Luhansk region. The pilot did not have time to eject, the report said.

Botashev was apparently employed by Wagner.

The incident resulted in his discharge was widely publicized at the time. Nobody lets the person fly after this.

I agree with you about those giant hats. You see them there, North Korea, etc. Ive always wondered what the back story is on those.
Military hats often have backstories. I just recently learned that the spike on WWI German helmets was there as a mounting point for those long horse tail manes they wore on parade back then. Brits still wear them. If you think about it, an Indian war bonnet is also fairly commical too. But these ridiculously large Russian hats, I have no idea where or when those began.

With the lift that hat produces, you don’t need a parachute.

What is it with Russians and their grotesque military hats?

We are repeatedly told Russia has air superiority in all of Ukraine, that it can destroy anything in Ukraine, anytime it wishes. It that were true, it seems very unlikely this could take place.

Its not true. So you can relax. If it were even remotely true, then the Orcs would be using their heavy bombers to bomb the country flat. The VFK is terrified of operating in the Ukraine because of all the anti-air missiles.

Don’t let the lefties hear you say that; you’ll be canceled as fast as they can shriek “Safe Space!”

Great news if true.

Post 13. Neither side can fly there in safety, including us.
The Russian heavy bomber raid on the NATO stockpiles near Lviv were cruise missiles launched from safety over the Sea of Azov.
Tactical air is very dangerous, the Russians use very little and the Ukes none.

Both sides have the very dangerous Soviet high altitude systems, and the Uke side is flooded with Stingers.
And Ukes and NATO have to operate knowing that all of Ukraine is in easy range of S-400s.

Flying there is deadly for everyone. That’s why this is a ground war, and artillery is so important. Thankfully the Ukes are somewhat behind the curve on that.

I did not know our Army ever had those type of hats. Another unusual one is that oddly shaped “commodore” hat.

The gorget is another interesting piece of military dress. It started off as a steel or leather protector for the neck and chest and, as guns got more powerful, was reduced in sized and worn as a symbol of rank. It also effectively communicated "kill me first" on the battlefield. Here's George Washington wearing one during the French and Indian War.

I always assumed it developed as an evolution of the shako hat that gradually become lower and wider, but apparently those hats appeared and were used somewhat concurrently with shakos, were abolished and reinstated in various services over the 1800s and 1900s. They’re that large simply because the Russians thought it looked good. Varieties of the hat used by other countries don’t appear to have been so disproportionately large. I’ve read that red army grunts had various derogatory nicknames for the hats, including some that basically implied that their officers were in a fashion war with the Germans, vying to have the most outrageously fabulous uniforms.

The Russian military started using a redesigned cap a few years ago that is of a more normal size.

Maybe he wasn’t getting enough lift from the front edge of that hat.

Not really. Nothing but a sociopath feels happy at the shootdown of an aircraft or the sinking of a ship.
Nazi Germany was pure evil, but a sane person should feel equally sickened watching the Bismark sink with 2000 men, or the Hood detonate with only 3 survivors.
Same with air combat.

And this guy was only bombing nazi forces if this is true.

That neck protector is another thing I have seen. A metal plate on a chain around the neck. I saw that one recently in a photo somewhere that I can’t remember.
