“Kissinger was the architect of the détente with China under the Nixon administration, and one of the world’s foremost advocates of realpolitik, in which nations put morals and principles aside to achieve their aims.”

Unfreakinbelievable

Looking back at the world circa 1970, Nixon et al did a remarkable thing. They managed to wedge a gap between China and Russia. How that wedge was managed over the last 50 years has gotten us to this place. Nixon had nothing to do with that course.

Meanwhile Kissinger with Nixon’s urging managed to get us out of Vietnam. That quagmire would have gone on for another 50 years given how it was being fought. Refusal to widen the war (nixon was lambasted for going into Cambodia) by taking out Hyphong with mines was ridicules. It was so what the country wanted that Nixon was reelected with 49 states approval. It was set in motion but completed after the Dems managed to get him removed over some BS political spying.

On both accounts I support what they did.
