A former co-worker of mine was a Turk, secular Muslim and army veteran. He told me it was easiest to think about Turkey as an army in search of a country and the government as a kleptocracy supported by the army.

This was more than a decade ago. Don't know if it is still true.

It’s a nice description that I think was probably much more true when it was still a Kemalist country. Now that it has gone Islamist, I think that’s probably much less true.
