The article tries to make it all about “hate” and tensions between China and Taiwan, but if you read on down, there’s this:

A former neighbor, meanwhile, says Chou’s life unraveled after he was nearly beaten to death several years ago.

Chou had been a pleasant man who used to own the Las Vegas apartment building where he lived, Balmore Orellana told The Associated Press.

But Orellana said Chou received a head injury and serious body injuries in an attack by a tenant and he sold the property. The neighbor said that last summer Chou fired a gun inside his apartment. No one was hurt but he was evicted.

Orellana says Chou’s mental ability seemed to diminish in recent months, he was angry that the government didn’t provide comfort in his retirement, and he may have been homeless.”

Sounds like the man’s brain was broken and he’d fallen through the floor. People with broken brains with uncontrollable emotions, fear, rage, look for a “cause” or “reason” or target. At which point perhaps he started ruminating about his not-so-pleasant youthful days in Taiwan and took it out on those innocent church goers. Maybe I have it wrong, but it sounds like it could well have happened that way.

But “racial hatred” (even though Taiwan is 97% Han and Chou is a Han surname, so race does not come into it) and the China-Taiwan thing (already in the news) get people more worked up, get more clicks than just another case of untreated mental illness. One wonders if his family tried to get him help but could not.

Yes.

I figure he’s nuts and his anti-Taiwan pro-China beliefs were the motive.

Would he have done something so crazy if the events described hadn’t occurred?

Doesn’t matter.

And there is no reason to conclude that the portrait presented is 100% accurate either.

I assume his defense will play this up.

Another fallen (from owning the apartment building in which he lived to being evicted from it is quite a fall!) person who was failed by all the highly touted, lavishly funded, social services of the left. Seems like they’ve interacted in the past with every crazy mass shooter, pronounced all of them sane enough to release, and not worthy of triggering their red flag laws. All the while whining we need more red flag laws for them to ignore. While every norm who’d interacted with the perps knew they were dangerous lunatics. Then, having completely failed to follow thru on their looney bin emptying “safely” promises the left blame us for their free range loons.
