Kind of a mix - America/EU sets Ukraine policy and war strategy, which is why you never see Ukraine retreat and redeploy (and only surrender when they disobey orders from above) - rather we have given Ukraine instructions to fight to the last man. After all, the stated goal of the United States and EU is to Weaken Russia and/or take out Putin, not to bring peace to Ukraine.
Our enforcers in Ukraine are the Azovs, which is why you see them at virtually every meeting with Westerners involved. Zelensky knows full well what his fate is if he doesn’t follow orders from the West...they are right next to him and don’t mind being in photo ops.
He was the legitimately elected and internationally recognized leader of Ukraine who was overthrown in a violent coup, supported by outside nations, and an unelected oligarchy was installed.

I am actually surprised (and Putin too!) of the level of support Zelensky got from the Russian sympathizers in Ukraine.
The biggest difference between Russians and Ukrainians is the motivation.
If everybody hated Zelensky, there would be no motivation on the Ukrainian side.
Instead, even the former Russian sympathizers enrolled en masse in defending the Ukraine!
This cannot be ordered or forced by bullets!

LOL, some of you people are really off your rocker, Yanukovych might have been a corrupt politician like all the rest of them over there, but at least he thought he was doing what was in the best interests of Ukraine. Besides the $2 billion in transit fees from that gas pipeline going through there, Ukraine was also receiving other perks from Russia like subsidized energy. Yanukovych was wise to play both sides being how Ukraine sits on Russia’s border. What does Ukraine get from cozying up with NATO? A destroyed country and a huge number of dead Ukrainians. And you think Yanukovych the bad guy and Zelensky the hero? Some of you folks are really just flat out delusional.
