GOP cry of ‘America first’ returns over aid to Ukraine
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | May 12, 2022 | Jamie Dupree

Up until this week, there were only a handful of Republicans in Congress who openly opposed American military assistance for Ukraine to help fight off a Russian invasion — but that number jumped dramatically Tuesday night when the U.S. House easily approved a nearly $40 billion aid package.

“The American people do not support paying for constant U.S. involvement in foreign affairs while our own government fails our own country,” said U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Rome, one of 57 House Republicans to vote against the Ukraine aid plan.

“We swore an oath to serve the United States of America,” Greene said. “Not the United States of Ukraine.”

(snip)

With Greene and Gaetz leading the way, the Republican Party now has developed what could be called an anti-war wing, while Democrats have thrown aside what had been years of routinely downplaying threats emanating from Moscow and Vladimir Putin.

We've come a long way to get to a point where the Dems are the pro-war group and many in the GOP are resisting the call to become more deeply enmeshed in a foreign battle.

Happy to see Trump standing tall on America First while the pro-war sabers rattle. The former president said yesterday:

“The Democrats are sending another $40 billion to Ukraine, yet America’s parents are struggling to even feed their children”.

Amen.

Certainly hope so.

We need to spend that money here in the USA.

That pretty much sums it up, thanks.

One more concept to add to that list:

Spending American money on Ukraine = good
Spending American money on America = bad

“With Greene and Gaetz leading the way”

Gaetz is one of my favorites in Congress, but wrong on this issue.

Russia invaded Ukraine for no reason except to steal the land and kill the people.

If Russia isn’t stopped there they will move to other countries that ARE part of NATO, and then we WILL be fighting and dying in WW3.

The people of Ukraine are doing their own fighting and dying, whatever it costs to support them is better than American GIs having to go in to do it.

Enough with the Liberaltarian bullshit!

No, Gaetz is correct.

The USA is out of the world policeman business.

We have heard stories of how Russia’s military has been significantly degraded in the war. They don’t have the ability to seriously attack any other nations at this time. So that warmonger excuse won’t fly, either.

Fresh off the presses:

“Russia has lost ‘one third’ of its ground force and ‘significantly behind schedule’, says UK”

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/russia-ukraine-war-invasion-donbas-mod-latest-update-zelensky-b1000085.html

NATO could and would mop up this weakened Russia should Russia try to attack an actual NATO nation (which Ukraine is not) at this time.

We give money to NATO, and most European nations are in NATO.

It’s their (Europe’s) fight, not ours. And, of course, we are in NATO. We’ve already helped them.

No more American money for the war. We have our own needs here. Not thousands of miles away.

And it goes without saying no American troops for the war.

So are you advocating for some kind of massive expansion of the welfare state? It sounds like MTG and others want the federal gov’t to provide everyone with baby formula.

I’ll take baby formula for American babies over billions of dollars shipped out of the nation for a foreign war we’re not involved in.

Every single time.

I’m not into military industrial complex welfare, either. Or global policeman welfare.

Spend American money in America, not in Europe or for Europe.

America First. That’s how it works. Not Europe First or Zelensky First.

“NATO could and would mop up this weakened Russia should Russia try to attack an actual NATO nation (which Ukraine is not) at this time.”

More Liberaltarian BS.

NATO nations are right next door and Russia has already said they are next on the list.

If Russia goes in a NATO country it means war with nukes!

They don’t need a big army or more equipment for that.

I love it. With everything we are facing in this country, I want the democrats to die on the hill of spending on a foreign country.

Just not used to seeing the language of the Left tossed around so freely here, but it seems to be increasingly common…

Left or right, it’s still an accurate term and as Confucius observed, we should rectify the names by calling things what they actually are.

Reading Mr. Dupree’s column and the posts in the forum, once again lead me to ask, which of the four parties do you seriously think will be in the majority next January?

The GOPe? The Vichy Republicans? The MAGA Republicans?
The Democrats?
