Exactly, McCain was the perfect foil for the ineligible Kenyan from Indonesia.
Similarly ineligible because he was born in Panama, but the son and grandson of Admirals so he made the most sympathetic case to not uphold the Constitution and it got everyone arguing about McCain and not Obama.
The Senate passed a resolution declaring McCain to be a natural born citizen in spite of being born in Panama owing to his TWO citizen parents and Obama voted for it, knowing he had only one and that his foreign father had made him a British subject and Kenyan national at birth.
Both parties wanted the natural born citizen clause neutered and Obama was the way to get it done.
The GOP had a stable full of ineligibles and those people were seen as the future of the party.
Cruz, Rubio, Jindal, Haley and George P Bush were all born with foreign nationality and are not natural born citizens.
