Putin's latest battlefield humiliation: Ukraine thwarts Russian battalion's river-crossing and destroys at least 58 vehicles

as Donbas offensive stalls and Kyiv's troops counter-attack Russia was attempting to cross the Donets river at Bilohorivka to surround the city of Lysychansk, in Donbas

But Ukrainian engineer claims to have successfully guessed where they would try to cross and laid a trap Sound of tugboats putting temporary bridge in place triggered a massive artillery and airstrike barrage Satellite images show bridge was destroyed along with dozens of Russian vehicles, inflicting heavy casualties

Russia has suffered yet another battlefield humiliation after Ukraine successfully thwarted its attempt to cross a river in Donbas, destroying dozens of vehicles and inflicting heavy casualties.

Satellite images lay bare the scale of the failure with the remains of two pontoon bridges drifting in the Donets River at Bilohorivka, west of the city of Lysychansk, surrounded by the ruins of tanks and armoured vehicles.

It appears Russian commanders were attempting to surround Lysychansk - and its sister city of Severodonetsk - with the crossing, but saw their sneak-attack turn into a massacre when Ukraine correctly guessed their plans.

'Maxim', a Twitter user claiming to be a Ukrainian military engineer, says he identified the spot where Russia was most-likely to try crossing the river on May 7 and told his commanders to listen out for the sound of tugboat engines pushing a pontoon bridge into place as a sure sign that a crossing was imminent.

On the morning of May 8 Russia blanketed the river with smoke by burning nearby fields and throwing smoke grenades, he said, but commanders detected the sound of boat engines and called in artillery strikes which caused devastating losses.

It came as Ukraine’s generals said Russia’s offensive in the Donbass has largely stalled, with Putin’s troops forced on to the defensive north of Kharkiv as counter-attacks push the invaders back across their own border.

In a late-Wednesday update, Ukraine’s commander said there had been no major attacks around Izyum - where the bulk of its Donbas force is located - or in Mykolaiv or Kryvyi Rih, hundreds of miles to the south, where it has been forced to reinforce its units after taking casualties.

To the north of Kharkiv, commanders said ‘occupying forces moved to the defence in order to slow down the pace of the offensive of our troops’. It means the only section of frontline that remains active is around Severodonetsk - where the bridge ambush took place - Donetsk and Mariupol, where Ukrainian defenders are still holding out.

The remains of at least three Russian tanks and another four armoured infantry vehicles are seen on one bank of the river, along with other pieces of wreckage poking out from under the water

No doubt we provided intelligence of what they were doing.

I think it’s clear, the days of conventional war fare are over.

Someone like Putin or any other nuclear owning despot, can do one of two things.

1. Slug it out with ground and air troops that will incur casualties or
2. Tactical nukes that ends things here and now

Why would Putin continue to be humiliated doing it the number ! way? Especially now that it’s been made clear to him, that the USA is heavily engaged in the fight.

What does Putin have to lose at this point to detonate a small nuclear explosion?
The West, ie Biden will do nothing, and the display might bring everyone to the negotiating table quickly.

There’s no reason to pour more money and hardware there unless we are thinking this as our chance to wipe out Putin, here and now.

Madness. Pure madness. We’re bragging about what we’re doing to kill their generals and ships. Now we wipe out dozens of vehicles using our intel. I don’t think for one minute that they were listening for tug boats...

So why are we giving them 40 billion dollars again?

The same reason why cars in Russia have dashcams.

So we can watch the Russians kill themselves.

"The West, ie Biden will do nothing"

That’s what Putin thought when he started this …

You've forgotten "3. Pull out and go home!"

And also forgotten "4. Put a bullet in Putin's head, pull out, and go home!"

I notice there is nothing in the Mail about the failed Snake Island assault over the weekend.

So far the Russians have left the power generation system intact, but at any time they can destroy it. Other than not wanting to increase the suffering of the civilian population, I wonder why? They can shut down the power grid out easily.

Good morning nikos.

I’ve often wondered what European countries, or the world would actually do if Putin lit off a nuke of any size.

Some well thought out opinions could have me reading all day.

If the western media was the play-by-play announcer for a basketball game between high school Democrats and a Republican pro team, the media would only provide the scores of the Democrats and the fouls of the Republicans. Any listener would be in a state of shock when they find out the pros trounced the high schoolers.

Lies only buy time; the truth comes out in the end. But to win an election, the media knows that time is all that's needed. If the western media continues to pull this off over Ukraine, resulting in tens of thousands of additional deaths and billions in American taxpayer money gone missing, you know they are going to try this at home with future elections.

It is truly amazing that after Al Gore's invention went world-wide, the deep-state-media-industrial-complex could pull off such an organized scam on such a large scale. Does anyone remember the violent war protests the Democrats used to throw over every NATO military action?

Ukraine can just as easily shut down the Russian power grid. There is a nationwide sabotage operation successfully taking out weapons production facilities across Russia. The power grid would be a much easier target than those.

If Ukraine loses power the Ukrainians will shrug and fight in the dark. If Russia loses electricity the Russian people will realize the mess Putin has got them in and will throw the regime out.

Russia will never use nukes for a very simple reason. A bunch of the strikes will look like this:

A significant portion of Russia's convention missile attacks end like this and there is no evidence the nuclear arsenal is in any better shape than the rest of the Soviet legacy equipment.

Drop a nuke that doesn't go off and you have donated it to the Ukrainian army. Within a few weeks that nuke will then go off in range Putin's dacha.
