Yep. It’s a fake lake started when the Colorado burst through and flooded the area.

It was through the Imperial Canal, correct?

It’s a natural low point, below sea level, so it has been a lake before, and has also been a dry lake bed before, in different eras.

The Alamo canal (off the Colorado River) burst just west of Yuma and flooded all the way to the Salton Sink which became the Salton Sea.
