Probably hundreds of thousands of those with dementia who are affected to one degree or another are licensed and drive. Early stage people, and those without a spouse, without handlers etc.

A more immediate worry for the officers who attacked this man is the federal statute re deprivation of rights under color of law. Particularly this section =>

“..and if bodily injury results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include the use, attempted use, or threatened use of a dangerous weapon, explosives, or fire, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both;”

What a bunch of tough guys.
5 cops and a confused old man.
This is why so many turn against police.
Completely unnecessary.

“Police really need mental health care training. This man was flagged by a Silver Alert.”

The cop that broke the old lady’s arm not long ago received a 5 year prison sentence 🤪

There are many, many people on the road with dementia. It doesn’t initially affect motor skills. Driver with dementia may forget where he/she is going, but they can drive just fine.

Not saying it is right or wrong, but that is the way it is.

“He was already in handcuffs genius. How could he resist then? Harsh language? The thugs decided to play bumper ball with him because they enjoy that sort of stuff.”

One can resist while in handcuffs by pulling away, twisting, running, kicking, biting etc. I guess you never tried to contain someone who didn’t want to be held Mr. Experience. You saying they enjoyed it makes you pretty transparent.

Having spent the bigger part of My life in the Automotive Repair and Parts biz (18 years selling parts and 12 turning wrenches for a living) I have to say that it would be much easier to remove the Distributor Cap and Rotor or pull out a Fuse to disable the ECM depending on the Year/Make/Model of the vehicle.

I’ve attended the American Psychiatric Association presentations on mental health training for police. Memphis had a team long ago.

It also helps veterans who get PTSD flashbacks that get them in trouble....

It teaches proper techniques to diffuse rather than exacerbate confrontations.

If a person is not able to follow simple police instructions it might mean they have some dementia. If so perhaps they shouldn’t be driving. Of course he can’t drive now because he’s dead.

Sad clumsy display of police “work”. Police dog?

Fortunately my Alzheimer’s addled mom gave up her DL and accepted a state ID card. Just to be on the safe side, she doesn’t have the keys. If she had needed the keys for psychological (comfort blanket) reasons we would have given her a set that doesn’t work...

My mom smeared the front off her car TWICE within a month of driving time, several months for the first repair and second repair, why the insurance company didn’t just total the car either time is beyond me.

She ways already getting lost.

We moved her up here and in the transfer switched her to a state ID. The plan was to buy her a house in this neighborhood where we could check up on her frequently, and perhaps get a live-in caretaker. No joy. The Realtor fired her after showing her over 60 homes. (Plus the over 30 she looked at where she has family in another state, burned out a couple Realtors there too...)

Then the formal diagnosis, and the realization that she lacks the mental capacity to enter a contract.

Ah well, three generations in a 1000 sqft house. What could possibly go wrong?

“He was completely disgusted by the over-the-top use of force and said so into the mike.”

Gives a bit of hope that there are indeed a few good cops out there still.

But, I wonder if that cop will testify against the thugs if it comes to that?

It might be time for some Cops to use their brain and pick their battles wisely...

They did.

Old white guy = they can get their jollies with no riots.

If it’s too easy or obvious, it’s too easy. A lot of old men still know more about cars than they’ve forgot because they come from a generation of diy.

All of my demented relatives were also paranoid and if there have been family discussions about driving, then they will expect/suspect sabotage.

I was always surprised at how confused, yet crafty Gramps could be.

Brush up on medical definitions.

A stroke is a blockage of blood to the brain. A cranial hemorrhage often results from traumatic injury to the head. You know, like having some thug cop smacking your face into the back of a vehicle. Then throwing you to the ground, unable to break your fall because the handcuffed you.

They probably think the cops shoulda shot him, just to make sure he wasn’t a threat.
