WARREN COUNTY, V.a. (FOX 5 DC) - Bodycam video of a traffic stop involving a 77-year-old man who died two weeks after the encounter has been released by the Front Royal Police Department
Ralph Ennis was stopped by Warren County Sheriff's Office deputies on April 2 around 1:21 a.m. for going 63 mph in a 55 mph zone. WSCO says Ennis was also driving erratically.
Ennis refused to yield to the deputy’s emergency vehicle even after displaying emergency lights and siren, the WSCO says. The WCSO Patrol Supervisor requested the assistance of the Front Royal Police Department.
Ennis then entered the parking lot of the Royal Farms gas and convenience store, continued to the 7-11 Store at 251 Crooked Run Plaza and parked his truck in a parking area adjacent to the store.
A WCSO deputy gave commands to Ennis to exit his truck, which he did, and immediately walked toward the deputies. Ennis refused to comply with commands to stop, turn around and drop his vehicle's keys, which he held in his hand.
WCSO says Ennis’ continued failure to comply resulted in a deputy approaching Ennis from behind, and grabbing his arms in an attempt to control Ennis and place him under arrest. The deputy continued to give him commands to stop resisting, drop the keys and place his hands behind his back as Ennis was escorted several feet away to the rear of his pickup truck.
While attempting to restrain Ennis, two deputies and Ennis fell over the protruding trailer hitch of his pickup truck.
WCSO says Ennis sustained non-life-threatening injuries, such as a cut to the ring finger of his right hand caused by the jagged edge of his truck tailgate, and a cut above his right brow near his forehead.

With my mom, I just took the keys. Then, for reasons unknown, the state cancelled her license.
She would always say “what if you broke your leg?”
“I would call 911” was my reply.
He was already in handcuffs genius. How could he resist then? Harsh language? The thugs decided to play bumper ball with him because they enjoy that sort of stuff.
I wonder if Ralph was a veteran, and where and how he served his country.
This was definitely an abusive attack on a harmless old man.
You are absolutely correct.
My sister managed to figure out a lock system in a senior lockdown unit and got it opened and let the whole dang ward out.
She was drying out in there and actually, if I would have been there, I would have had her put into the VA since she was a head nurse in the military and the VA. She should have been put into the dry out ward in the VA since they know what the hell they are doing.
The strange part? She was once a head nurse on that very same ward.
Two half gallons of brandy a week...
If suspect is black, then ghetto lottery is won. Seriously I think there is a huge question all of people in America must solve or answer: Is it a civil right to resist police command?
Big, tough guys with grandpa - but nowhere to be found in Columbine when active shooters are inside the school killing kids.
She must have been quite a character.
I’ll dedicate my evening brandy to her!
We lived on opposite ends of the country and we did that once but somehow he managed to conjure up another set.
He was a master at “masking if you’re familiar with that term.
Yeah.
We were fortunate to live within minutes of my mom.
No, unless you think the cop with the body cam is ignorant. He was completely disgusted by the over-the-top use of force and said so into the mike.
You know, New York State recently passed a law that says you can’t leave your trailer hitch in the receiver if there’s no trailer attached. I thought it was over the top. But now I’m starting to think differently…
“He was completely disgusted by the over-the-top use of force and said so into the mike.”
Gives a bit of hope that there are indeed a few good cops out there still.
But, I wonder if that cop will testify against the thugs if it comes to that?
You are exactly right. We are very fortunate that my FIL (dementia) handed over his keys after his neurologist had him do a driving simulation and told him that his response time and judgment was so far off, that he could kill someone. If we had waited even a few months, things might have gone much differently because he didn’t believe he had dementia.
I’m on a support group right now and a poster had an elder care social worker get involved who told them they had to give their mom (with dementia) her keys back. She had already had several accidents. That was in Washington state.
Exactly my point. This poor man had been reported missing and was found by LEO a few months prior to this and yet his family still didn’t take proper precautions to protect him from himself.
But you can bet they will now try to cash in on his unfortunate demise.
Cops not going for an “arrest” for a traffic infraction...the sheriffs deputies were probably attempting “detain” and did a bad job of it. (As the arriving local P.D. officer states at the end of the video linked below)....predict a large payout for the family/estate.
LEO need to understand that we old people could die from anything.
The smart thing to do is disable the car by removing the fuel pump relay.
It might be time for some Cops to use their brain and pick their battles wisely...
Maybe, we had already hidden my FIL’s keys prior to that test.
Not everyone would know how to do what you suggest.
That was f***ing unjust and f***ing unf***ing called for. Jesus Christ. Oh that's gonna be...
He switched off his cam and mike in that last sentence. He switched off since the incident was over and he was driving away.
