Right you are. A free press should act as a powerful spotlight on the government. There was a reason the Founders put it in the very first amendment.

I used to think about the people working for Tass and Pravda in Russia. I would think how terrible it was for them to be restricted, and forced to report whatever garbage the commies served up.
Now I realize, those people weren’t forced, they did it enthusiastically, just as they do here. It’s one of the many reasons I’m so pessimistic about our future.
