Following the leak of a draft opinion document stating that the Supreme Court will vote to overturn Roe v Wade, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Thursday that the chamber will hold a vote next week to potentially codify abortion rights into law.
"Next week, the US Senate is going to vote on legislation to codify a woman's right to seek an abortion into federal law," said Schumer. "I intend to file cloture on this vital legislation Monday, which would set up a vote for Wednesday."
"Republicans will have two choices. They can own the destruction of women's rights, or they can reverse course and work to prevent the damage. Currently I'm skeptical that they'll do the latter," said Schumer.
"Republicans have been on the wrong side of history and the wrong side of America. A poll just released today from Data for Progress showed voters want Roe to stay a law of the land by a two to one margin. Democrats, independents and 35 percent of Republicans believe we should keep Roe in place.
"Next week's vote will be one of the most important we take, not only this session, but in this century. This is not an abstract exercise. It’s as real, It's as urgent as it gets," Schumer said.
The New York Senator had begun his announcement by blasting Republican’s reactions to Politico’s Monday evening article publishing the leaked document from he Supreme Court.
"For two decades, over two decades, Republicans across the country have worked to dismantle Roe. They've worked to take away the rights of women who simply want to make their own choices and not be told by some doctors, some senators, some court justice, how to treat their bodies," he said.

62 million babies later...
“REAKING”.......Freudian slip or intentional?
if USSC says its a state issue how can FEDGOV codify without a constitutional amendment?
is this just theater?
This can and should be thrown right back in their faces.
of course it is just theater. It won’t pass - they don’t have 60 votes.
Those are false choices. What about the THIRD CHOICE? Uphold the sanctity of life, protect the most innocent among us, and stop the wanton slaughter of babies.
The lawsuits will start as soon as they pass such a law and it will wind up right back at the court.
Yeah...not really.
How??
can good law follow bad? i doubt it.
I reject Chuckies attempt to frame the issue the way the socialist totalitarians want to.
Chuck, you can stand on the side of death, like you said you’re gonna do, or you can stand on the side of life.
God rebuke you Chuckie.
I pray that this Evil effort fails miserably.
I didn’t know federal law was supreme to Constitutional Law?
Make them get very specific with the language. None of this “choice” or “reproductive rights” double talk. Spell out what abortion actually is, and put it in the bill. Something like “women have the right to hire a doctor to kill her baby before it can get a chance to breathe for itself”. But they can’t do that, of course.
“Republicans will have two choices. They can own the destruction of women’s rights...”
At least half of all Republicans are women. So according to ?Chuckie, these women are hell bent on destroying their own rights.
If this is constitutional, then so is DOMA.
Schumer does indeed reak.
I think the left is mistaken as to how much support there is for abortion these days. Since Roe v. Wade so much medical advancement has been made that even some on the left realize that it is not just a clump of tissue that “may” turn into a child.
I’ve pretty much blocked all lefties out of my life over the past couple of years (couldn’t stand the craziness over Covid), but those I knew before that were already getting to the point of agreeing that after six to eight weeks, abortion shouldn’t be allowed. And, they were appalled at third trimester abortions. I think the left is “jumping the shark” on this issue and it will not be the vote “getter” they are expecting. A lot of normal liberals are getting tired of the progressives hi-jacking the democrat party. Just look at the turn-out numbers in Ohio with regards to Democrats and Republicans.
Yes, the media amplifies the loudest voices, but I don’t think they have as much support as they think. Most moderate liberals are more concerned with paying their mortgage, putting gas in their vehicle, and paying for the food on the table for the children they DID have.
I pray God gives us a sign that He is watching this....
