What we need is a Billy Mitchell type... naw the Navy will never believe the Air Force can sink a ship. Except one that is defenseless....

They were using 2,000lb bombs in 1921.
101 years later still are. Same result is the ship is sunk.

Very unimpressive.

A 2k lb bomb is massive overkill against a thin skinned medium sized freighter not shooting back or taking evasive action.

I heard about this weapon back in the 80s. The reason it took this long to go public is that the Navy has been working on a countermeasure for that long.

I have strong doubts that the countermeasure works. It’s basically CIWS on steroids, with all the complications.

The future of naval warfare is horrifying.

Watched the video yesterday, the ship is gone before the water returns to the sea. BAd-ass

The Air Force and Navy jointly developed and both use JDAM munitions. Nothing new here.

The OP mentions this is a modified 2000lb JDAM. I doubt the modifications are much more than modifying the fusing, which is already adjustable. This seems to me to be a difficult antiship weapon to defend against. Stand-off distance delivery. Very small object at supersonic speed. Disable the guidance and it's still coming on the unguided ballistic trajectory over the last few seconds. Big boom.

I can see this also as possibly a very effective defense against small boat swarms. Imagine a bomb truck F-15, F-18 or F-35 dumping a load of the existing small precision JDAM bombs already in the inventory to cover a several square mile area where a group of small boats are operating. Air burst fusing or contact? Boom boom boom.

“You misunderstand, the AF invented this to SINK the Navy.”

Reminds me of an old USAF payday Drinkin’ Song (Me Bonnie Lies Over The Icean)

If I had the wings of an eagle and the ass the Cape Buffalo, I’d fly over the ocean and s*** on the Navy below...

1 2k bomb will sink an unmanned cargo vessel with no watertight integrity set or damage control being performed by motivated sailors.

JDAMS don’t have the standoff capability needed for any reasonably equipped ship with defensive weapons.

Antiship weapons like Harpoon and SLAMER allowed standoff ranges of 60nm to 150nm.

JDAMS are good for about 15 miles and even the extended range JADMS are only good for about 45 miles.

“The future of naval warfare is horrifying.”

Mutally assured destruction. It’s a philosophy that works, on (in) both ape and man.

My biggest question is “why release this video right now?” Who are we trying to impress with our non-nuclear ship sinking capacity? Maybe China is getting frisky.

This is conventional warfare, not nuclear.

Yes, non-nuclear, I guess I should have said conventional.

Upon reflection, this bomb may also be good for attacking submarines, if we knew the location of one. Whatever, why are they showing it now?
