In a disturbing sequence early on in “The Northman,” Robert Eggers’s brutal new Viking revenge epic, a band of entranced berserker warriors raid a Rus village. The ensuing slaughter is depicted in realist detail. At one point the film’s protagonist, Amleth, played by Alexander Skarsgård, rips out an enemy’s throat with his teeth.
In the raid’s aftermath, everyone but a handful of adult villagers — deemed healthy enough to survive the winter as slaves — is rounded up and locked in a house, including the children. A pair of berserkers casually toss torches on the thatched roof as those trapped inside scream and beg for their lives.
More or less the whole film is like that, and it’s not that fun to watch. But amid all the mud and smoke and butchery, and elaborately rendered scenes of pagan witchcraft, we get a harrowing glimpse of pre-Christian northern Europe. Whatever else Eggers is trying to do in “The Northman,” he makes no effort to gloss over the breathtaking violence and pitilessness of Viking culture.

Post Christian West? Face it, the West has already entered the era of post Christian neo pagan decadence. A world that embraces hedonism, widespread drug use, celebrity and earth worship, celebrates homosexuality and all its perverse permutations, hedonism and kills pre born human life with impunity, is no livable or sustainable.
Sadly even the Vatican is now a post-Christian NGO ...
The hatred of and intolerance toward conservative Christians (there are no other) is becoming more manifest and palpable daily, which the ever-increasing extremism of the Left works to make manifest, and with agnostic, libertarian, pro-Putin (who censors all Christians apart from his state church) conservatives implicitly scorning those who stand for Christ above all, while we see increasing spiritual declension even in evangelical ranks, still the most conservatives religious major group, thank God/havemercy
Norsemen on Netflix was quite funny. During domestic conversations the Vikings were overly polite and politically correct, but while raiding monasteries, ruthlessly murderous. One Viking gal collected penis’ of monks. Hilarious.
Pre-Christian west had no choice as this was the only life they knew. The Post-Christian west can always go back to a better time once they get tired of where their paganism is going. We in the USA are lucky that we are not as centralized as other western countries, so we can all see the trainwrecks in SF, LA, CHI, and NYC.
Western Christendon suffered a centuries long decline, which really picked up speed after the Enlightenment and French Revolution. Then the Great War finally shattered what was left of Christianity's grip on the West.
Because the Christian West was somehow less violent?

Yup. The ability to plan. If you weren't smart enough to know how to lay-in enough food and have shelter to get you through the winter, you died.
Chip, chip, a little every year, only the best planners survived the cold.
You and I are descendents of those superior planners.

“More effective violence” implies less violence. For example, nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki was more effective violence than firebombing every city in Japan. It also resulted in far fewer casualties than the alternative.

World Wars I & II really mark the end of the West.
So far it is unclear what the new civilization will look like and what dark age will be prior to its emergence.
