There are two parts to the controller’s job, Malia Cohen says.
There are the everyday functions — writing checks, conducting audits, making policy recommendations and serving on nearly 80 boards, including ones that oversee state employee retirement funds.
But Cohen says the position is also a platform to make California more equitable and to promote more diverse leadership — goals that she is passionate, even emotional, about and a role that she says she is well prepared for from her time on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and state Board of Equalization.

Distribution of tax dollars. Take from the makers and give to takers.
God forbid this woman simply do her job. A good controller should only care about black and white—the numbers on the page, that is.
“state Board of Equalization”, that sounds like something right out of Atlas Shrugged.
There are two parts to the controller’s job, Malia Cohen says.

She ‘forgot’ to mention the third part: embezzlement.
She needs to deep audit the Lottery & where all those ticket sales revenue actually go.
Lottery started about 1986, and IIRC, there has NEVER been an audit of the money ‘the schools get’.
“I think that we need to have more diversity, I think we need to have more conversations about equity”
A sure indicator of future failure.
The controller disburses the funds according to the law, not according to the controller’s own idea of “equity”.
Line her own pockets.
The California Board of Equalization is notorious for sending out tax bills to out-of-state firms that sell things to Californians. These firms have no obligation in law to pay the bills yet since about 40% of the people who get these scam notices pay them then the BOE keeps sending them.
Oh, and if you think the BOE is bad just wait until you meet the Franchise Tax Board and their SWAT team.
let me guess, lying would be her number one priority.
I moved out of Calif in Dec 2004.
For 2 years-—I kept getting DEMANDS for me to register my vehicles/trailers/ in Calif & to renew my driver’s licenses.
These DEMANDS came to my new address at my new property in Nevada.
They had that address because I turned in vehicle plates when I registered vehicles, etc., here, and those plates were physically returned to CALIF by Nevada DMV, with proof I now live here.
I have friends who moved from N Calif & went to Kansas. They got the SAME DEMANDS...they also got 2 years of demands.
I wonder how much money Calif wastes doing such illegal demands.???
“I wonder how much money Calif wastes doing such illegal demands.???”
It’s not wasted when so many rubes pay these scam bills.
It’s revenue.
Anyone who even utters the word “equity” should be permanently disqualified from ever holding any government office.
