WSJ: Russia Preparing for Global Conflict With US, West

Russia is modifying its invasion of Ukraine into a broader war against the West, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Kremlin leaders and state media have been warning Russians that the war with Ukraine could become a global war.

The U.S. and some allies, increasingly seeing an opportunity to contain Russia’s possible imperial ambitions, have increased military assistance to Ukraine. In response, Moscow has been preparing the Russian population for a potential larger war.

The Kremlin has been using the May 9th celebrations, which commemorate the Allied victory over Nazi Germany, to draw parallels between World War II and the invasion of Ukraine.

The building of a narrative of Russia as the victim of the West and the need to defend the country is gaining momentum, according to the Journal.

And Russia was actually moving in a positive rebuilding mode when Reagan was President.
Under Biden Russia has reverted to their violent, expansionist former ways .
That is what Reagan challenged and forced to come down.
And that’s what American patriots support today.
Patriots don’t support a tangled mess of Russian propaganda and ignore past Russian evil and present Russian evil.
You are being deceived to support evil that is front of your very eyes.
Wake up, rub the scales from your eyes.

You’re exactly right. There’s a group that doesn’t want any debate over the wisdom of getting in the middle of this war so they poison the well.

Under Biden Russia has reverted to their violent, expansionist former ways.

LOL. The US Deep State and now their Puppet Biden having been sending weapons, engaging in color-revolutions, meddling in their politics, getting corruption $$ and kick-backs, and promoting military alliances in a country 4900 miles from Washington DC that before February, most Americans couldn't find on a map.

Meanwhile Russia is acting on decades-long warnings to the West not to muck around in place that has been part of Russia for 3 or more centuries, is the heart of their religion and culture, and sits on their border and has been the route for constant invasions into Russia.

And they are the "expansionist" ones. Holy crap, just listen to yourself and the neocon propaganda you are repeating.

Wake up, rub the scales from your eyes.

So do you actually know what Putin will or won’t do?

That’s a valuable ability. Imagine if the military had that special power. Right now they labor under the illusion that “the other side gets a vote” and you’d better know what they are capable of doing as opposed to what’s convenient for your own plans.

Not sure to which post you are replying. I assume Putin or whoever replaces him will be a semi-rational agent and will weigh what the Soviets used to call, "the objective correlation of forces." These at the moment are not aligning with Russia.

The problem right now is that both sides have climbed up a rhetorical mountain from which, due to the heavy losses on both sides, it will be very hard to climb down.

I think there are realistic conditions for a peace settlement, but it will be very difficult for Russia to accept them due to appearing to have been defeated by Ukraine. Those suggestions should probably come from the US (with agreement by Ukraine) as a climb down with a peer power is considerably less humiliating.

However the morons in charge here are too timid to do anything, as an initial refusal by Russia would mean we would have to escalate further to bring pressure. What's likely to happen is that Russia will try escalating further to raise the stakes, maybe by invading Moldova. So there's a real risk of uncontrolled escalation.

Do you are ok if your neighbor Vladimir kicks your door in, rapes your wife, shoots you, steals everything in your house , and then moved in your house .
And then 5 years later when you attempt to move back in your house; everyone says, forget it.
Why are you bringing up old history. Vladimir owns your house.

That's pretty much the message you are communicating

Amazing pro Russian trolls have infested FR.
Are you guys actually Antifa members who bet their buddies you could get on a conservative website and spew pro Russian propaganda ?

Soon the Republic of Moldova is going to be kicking Putin’s butt.

If Putin really wanted to, he would level Ukraine.

In fact, he's been going out of his way to limit non-combatant deaths, at the expense of his own military.

I live 5000 miles away from that neighborhood. They can police themselves.

Enjoy your woke, deep-state empire. I'll be sure to say "told you so!" next time you complain about your massive, woke Fed.gov trampling on you and your politics.

If he were a puppet, he would have left when the US suggested early in the war.

The US NEVER suggested that. In fact, they want him to stay and fight Russia to the death.

Because they can't afford for their corruption and child sex trafficking to become public. This war is considered a great inconvenience by many in US intel, State, and the rest of our illegitimate regime, who consider it an impediment to selling out the US to Iran, crushing Israel and defeating their real enemies at home: us.

You and others are so misinformed on this. You have no idea what's really going on behind the scenes.

Well I guess we have to have members of the elect inform us about the truth. /s

You don't see to understnad something that appears quite clear to me: they don't have to worry about Biden's or anyone else's corruption being exposed: all the information is publicly available on Hunter's laptop and other sources, just like many of the names involved in Epstein's Lolita Express.

What has happened? Absolutely nothing.

They are non-stories, they don't exist as far as the media and the political class whom they serve goes. Therefore, it doesn't matter politically.

We can push around at the edges, but short of CWII, there's very little we can do when both the political and business classes march in lockstep to protect their impunity.

They don't have to fight hard to hide anything, let alone push a war.

“I live 5000 miles away from that neighborhood. “

Your neighbor Vladimir NEXT DOOR to you wherever you currently live.
Or maybe his name is Henry Johnson or Tim Smith, the guy next door you.
Are you ok if that person does those terrible things to you and your family?

That is precisely what Ukraine has had happen to them.
How any civilized person can talk that away is beyond any realm of understanding .
It’s pure evil what Russia has done.

Don’t wash any of the deep state conspiracy crap into the equation to Simone how excuse it.
Russia is doing evil things, simple thing.
Civilized people shouldn’t support evil things.
Basic.

Putin got his ass kicked when his army cried and ran away from Kyiv. Since then the Russians have been committing war crimes against civilians and Putin has been giving them medals for it.

Pretty much agree. I can’t speak for everyone’s motives or arguments for getting us involved, but there are numerous reasons why we should not. I’ve always found it to be a wakeup call whenever my position on an issue aligned with someone like Biden, Obama, or other far left politician. Even without knowing all of the details on an issue, you could pretty much get it right every time by taking the opposite view.

“Russia invaded Ukraine because of Putin’s imperial ambitions.”

I believe this administration intentionally encouraged Putin to invade Ukraine. I’m not sure of all the reasons, but it looks like “we” wanted this to happen.

Misinformation/disinformation/misspeaking all contributed to Putin’s belief that he could easily achieve his objectives with Ukraine. It went down very similarly to how we enticed Sadam to invade Kuwait. It’s almost identical other than more sophistication was used in this case.

While he may have longterm aspirations along the lines you indicate, Russia has a very legitimate security concern with the positioning of weapons around her, much as we did during the Cuba missile crisis.

I was in a 24 hour restaurant a couple of years ago in the middle of the night. A group came in that started doing selfies with a gun. I’m generally pro-gun and open carry. But this is dangerous behavior that can lead to people dying. I did not confront the people, but we got out of there quickly and let the management deal with it.

That’s a lot like what happened leading up to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Things may escalate. We have a lot of warmongers and war profiteers who can’t wait to get us into another war. One of these days we will find ourselves on the losing end. We still have the world’s most powerful military, but we are not invincible. And that needs to be taken into account when flippantly deciding to engage in a war with the nation with the world’s largest nuclear arsenal.

And as I’ve pointed out repeatedly now, even IF there is a moral imperative to stop Russia, we should not assume We have the ABILITY to stop Russia. If someone tries to carjack you, or better yet, if you see someone trying to carjack a friend, you may have the legal and moral authority to intervene. But you also have to consider whether it is the WISEST thing to do. Someone might get killed needlessly otherwise.

“Sorry, but it can’t ‘easily’ escalate. There are many steps between shipping weapons and pressing the button.”

Don’t kid yourself.

Within a single 24 hour period either Putin or Biden could take specific actions that lead to the quick devastation of both of our nations. Literally, within days, it is within the realm of possibility that America and/or Russia, as we’ve known them, cease to exist.

Normalcy bias is one of the most dangerous of human traits. In this case it could lead to many millions of deaths.

Putin got his ass kicked when his army cried and ran away from Kyiv.

Because as I have previously stated, Putin is going to great lengths to minimize non-combatant causalities. He has given Ukraine countless chances to succeed.

If Zelenskyy was really winning he wouldn't be begging for money, arms, and mercenaries to help him every 5 minutes.

What you don't realize is that has always been the case. Both governments know what steps might lead to that, so they will be careful to avoid it.

The alternative is that we give the Russians everything they want every time they say, "nukes," which no American administration will ever do.

What we ought to do is agree with the Ukrainians on what the minimum terms are for a negotiated peace and quietly discuss this with the Russians. For example, for me conceding the Russian annexation of Crimea is realistic. Conceding any new territorial gains after Feb. 24 is not. If the Russians balk, keep ratcheting up the pressure, again, quietly. No hysterical nincompoopery about regime change in Moscow. The Russians need a face-saving exit and Ukraine needs peace and security guarantees to rebuild.

Putin is going to great lengths to minimize non-combatant causalities.

This simply complete nonsense: Putin is deliberately destroying as much civilian infrastructure as he can, and is clearly hitting residential areas as an act of terror. It's the same pattern as Russia as shown for centuries when faced with a recalcitrant invasion: kill as many civilians and deport as many as needed until resistance is broken.
