Russians like the idea of expanding their empire. Killing Russia in its entirety by starting a nuclear war, however, would be a 100% reduction in the empire.
What Russians understand about war is that sometimes you cut your losses, and build up until a better opportunity arises. That’s what Tsar Nicholas II did when he lost a naval battle with Japan. At 70% of NATO combined, Russia has plenty of land. And it will have other chances at Ukraine and the rest of Europe - alliances, like borders, don’t last forever.
