“Yeah, they flew their DJI kid drone over the area, said “Say, that’s a Russian general. The drone converted it to a lat/long in real time, communicated that to the asset waiting for a fire mission, and they killed a General”

You are aware that drones are capable of transmitting lat/long information and that a 13 year old could do it. Maybe a grown up said “look at all those antennas! Maybe we should blow that up.”

“It’s all homegrown Ukes with toy drones, managing to get lucky again and again and again, and again etc etc etc”

Apply Occams Razor. (Hint-look it up)

A drone of any kind is a really useful tool for an FO (Forward Observer). Its not going to get you a precise initial salvo, but it gives real time feedback for adjusting fire, which is an FO’s job. And it can see where he can’t.

There was a superb video a few weeks ago of a Ukrainian mortar team using a tiny drone to do this for a single mortar. That is huge. A small drone is fine for a short ranged weapon like an 82mm mortar. Set up the mortar, send up the drone, observe enemy (over the hill, in some trees, etc.), shoot, adjust, shoot, adjust, fire for effect, pack up mortar and leave, recover drone.
