“Russia needs to stop attempting to annex its neighbors by armed force”
If the kid on the other side of the playground knocks over another kid’s sandcastle is it really any of uncle Sam’s business to go and beat him up?
We shouldn’t give two craps what happens in crap hole country a and crap hole country b. Especially when it threatens to wreck the entire world.
We already answered that question when we accepted the relinquishment of nukes from the Ukes in the Budapest Accession to the United Nations senate-ratified Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty. We agreed to assure Uke ‘sovereignty and borders’ as of 1994.
You Americans should care, exactly because it threatens to wreck the entire world, with or without US involvement.

Adding to the empire is what Russia does for fun and recreation. Better that the Ukrainians smack the Russians upside the head and ward them off for some period of time than fight the Russians *and* the Ukrainians in Poland or the Baltics.
That’s why we fought Germany in Europe - to prevent it from eventually pacifying its European possessions and using their resources and production as a means to conquer us. Or, if the Russians won, the Russkies using Europe’s resources against us. Same reason we fought the Japanese in the Pacific after Pearl Harbor instead of conceding land the way the Russians did after being defeated in battle in 1905.

We did not want the Japanese to pacify China and use China’s manpower and resources against us. That’s the reality of staying independent - constant vigilance and material assistance, at minimum, to nations invaded by major powers in strategic areas (e.g. Europe).
