68 bullets fired in Near North shootout, but man accused of taking part only faces misdemeanor after prosecutors reject felony charges

Cook County prosecutors rejected felony charges against a man who allegedly admitted he was involved in a Near North Side shootout in which dozens of shots were fired Sunday evening.

Anthony D. Newman, 20, of Old Town, was charged only with a misdemeanor for having a gun without a valid FOID card, Cook County court records show. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office rejected more serious felony counts of gun possession and aggravated discharge, leading police to file the misdemeanor charge directly.

Officers initially responded to a call of shots fired at 6:10 p.m. in the 300 block of West Chestnut Street, where a witness reported seeing the occupants of two vehicles firing at each other, according to a police report. The witness also had surveillance footage allegedly showing Newman and another person running from the scene.

A law enforcement source said police recovered 68 shell casings near the intersection of Sedgwick and Locust streets, some of which were rounds from an assault rifle that caused damage as far as two blocks away.

Charging records obtained by the Sun-Times show the state’s attorney’s office rejected the felony charges on Monday night. Hours later, police filed the single misdemeanor count.

Prior to Sunday’s shooting, Newman was charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle in June 2020, but the case was later dropped. On Tuesday, he was ordered held on $10,000 bail during his initial court hearing in the new case, court records show.

He was released on bond the following day.

68 rounds, zero hits?

This has got to be a ghetto record.

This is why they have escalating crime, no one will prosecute and lock up the criminals.

The revolving door just keeps putting them back on the street.

A shootout in which 68 casings were recovered and bullets struck buildings two blocks away, no injuries reported. . . sounds like your typical black gunfight. Culprits released with a slap on the wrist . . . typical Cook County justice.

Kim Foxx is the primary threat to Chicago public safety. She needs to be removed ASAP.

Ah, but then they have more excuses to confiscate guns from law-abiding citizens.

That’s sad if there are turf wars so close to down town. I think most people who travel to Chicago have heard about the south and west side, but I think it’s really going to hurt Chicago economically if down town get crime ridden.

IF I went into the little town up the road here, went to the middle of Main Street and fired 68 9mm rounds at random, I’d be locked up for the rest of my life...that’s assuming the local LEOs didn’t kill me first...and knowing them personally, I know they would!!
Whadda stinkin’ BS joke this country has become under these azzwipes.

Imagine the hellfire that would rain down on a suburbanite who fired ONE round in his nice suburban neighborhood? He’d be nailed for “Discharging within city limits.”

You may be right. Police said more rounds were probably fired but 68 casings were found.

No bodies at the scene but shooter might show up with a self inflicted wounds just to avoid the embarrassment of not hitting someone.

Yep. Until we criminalize criminals, nothing will change. But that alone isn’t sufficient.

For a civilized society, you need Moms and Dads raising the babies. There are no Dads in the ghetto because LBJ chased all of them away with his “Great Society” crap. Until you get rid of welfare, civilized society won’t exist. It’s as simple as that.

Of course, to make a civilized society work when both Moms & Dads are there, you also need to bring God back. That’s another big challenge.

I wonder if having your name as a palindrome is a sign of the antichrist...

> 68 rounds, zero hits <

Given how everyone in authority lies these days, I wouldn’t be surprised if people were hit, but it was covered up.

Police chief: Two people on the sidewalk were hit by the gunfire.
Mayor Lightfoot: Our stats look bad enough as it is. So classify those injures as slip-and-falls.
Police chief: Why didn’t I think of that?

They don’t need an excuse, cops and prosecutors are corrupt agents of the state and if enemies of the state (you or I) fired one round the felonies would fly.
