The Senate was designed to be a check on the flaws of democracy. Of course, it has failed at that, since it has simply become a creature of partisanship. They do not represent the citizens of their respective states, as intended.

The Senate is to represent the states corporately to the federal government that is as a single entity. “The people” of those states have their input through their state legislators. “The people” are represented directly from their respective districts by their congresscritters. Well, that was what the Founding Fathers intended until the US progressives of the late 19th century (Looking at Woodrow Wilson!) thought they were smarter, as we can see and experienced, they weren’t!
