Putin's failing war in Ukraine has seen Russia lose years' worth of kit, experts say

That includes 939 tanks, 185 planes, 155 helicopters and 421 artillery: Kyiv army

Russia will be unable to fight another war for years because of catastrophic kit losses in Ukraine, defence experts said.

'It will take years for Russia to rebuild its inventories', according to the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

In fact, Putin will struggle in the Donbas because vital 'inventories are getting low', analyst Mark Cancian told The Times.

Wrecked Kremlin equipment now amounts to 939 tanks, 185 planes, 155 helicopters, 421 artillery units and eight ships, the Ukrainian army estimated this morning.

Kyiv estimates its forces have now killed 22,400 Russian soldiers, up from 22,100 yesterday.

Military analyst Henry Boyd from the International Institute for Strategic Studies said Putin could still draw on sizeable, Soviet-era reserve forces stationed across Russia.

But most Russian soldiers could be unable to use it, he added.

Mr Boyd told the newspaper: 'They kept a large number of Soviet-era tanks, armoured vehicles and artillery.

'You can probably compensate in terms of sheer numbers by reactivating older systems but there is a question mark over whether they will have the crews to man the vehicles and if they do, whether they have had sufficient training.'

“’You can probably compensate in terms of sheer numbers by reactivating older systems..”

Sure. What hasn’t been stolen outright is most likely rusty junk due to lack of maintenance.

Zelensky’s stenographer is moving the goalposts a bit. Ok Russia may win, but they’ll be unable to fight again for years.

It is not Russia we should be worrying about in the first place, its China. We also need to remember that NATO reserves are being drained along with our strategic oil during this time.

Another interesting point is much of the former armor was built in Ukraine.

It is difficult to know if these numbers are correct, or even close.

I suspect the major players who have sattelite observation of the war zone (there are several), know these losses to a couple of percent.

My suspicion is the actual losses are at least 2/3 of what is portrayed here.

Being a Russian soldier is becoming a tankless job.

All of the above is meaningless when you have nuclear weapons, and Putin has nuclear weapons. He could drop an atomic missile anywhere in Ukraine, as long as he doesn't care that the target will be unusable for him. And let's admit it, we're not going to atom bomb Russia if it drops a few in Ukraine (not that I am suggesting it); we are like the British in 1938, and Putin knows it.

It won’t be able to fight a conventional war with any degree of effectiveness. Russia should have taken the opportunity to try and be a good neighbor; unfortunately, its history precludes it.

How soon will we be able to? Yesterday there was an article about us running out of Stinger missiles and not being able to build new ones due to lack of rare earth minerals from Russia

The Pentagon is watching and learning. A single soldier with a shoulder launched rocket can do as much damage as a multi-million dollar tank or fighter. Drones a pretty handy too. Tech wins.

It a war with the USSR had broken out, we might have learned then what we know now. True, the technology has changed. But the allies would have probably defeated the communists in short order. Who knows if it would have escalated to nuclear war. Glad that we didn't have to find out. Glad that Reagan's resolve forced the USSR to capitulate.

If the Rooskies are smart, they will be buying some of what we left behind in Afghanistan. But their pride keeps them from doing this. Their pride in their own homemade weapons systems.

“Kit”... that’s funny (Brit thing).
“Kitted-up”
“Kit” is what soldiers personally carry. IMHO.
“That includes 939 tanks, 185 planes, 155 helicopters and 421 artillery” — those are major hardware pieces

Yes, the key is “conventional war.”

The big concern is what they will do when all their conventional armaments are destroyed and they are backed into a corner.

“It is not Russia we should be worrying about in the first place, its China.”

I agree that China is our biggest threat. But that does not dismiss the fact that Russia is also a threat to us. Ironically, I think China is a bigger threat to Russia at this time than to us, but that will change.
