At a recent focus group of Republican voters from swing states, the only surprise came about 80 minutes into the two-hour Zoom session, when participants were questioned about the power of Donald J. Trump's primary endorsements. Until then, the group had shown nothing but enduring loyalty and admiration for the former president. They echoed his views on immigration and critical race theory, questioned the integrity of the 2020 election and wished he were still president. Yet when asked how much Trump's much-heralded and intensely coveted endorsements would influence their vote in upcoming GOP primaries, they all hedged.
"If I was on the fence, that might be the final factor," a woman from North Carolina said. "But if I truly believed in the opposing candidate, it's not going to make me vote any differently." As long as the person she favors advocates strong America First and Make America Great Again policies, the voter said, she doesn't need to follow Trump's lead to feel she is supporting his creed.
That sentiment is playing out across the country, as primary season gets under way and voters head to the polls to pick slates for the first federal elections since Trump left the White House—some 29 states will vote in May and June, with most of the rest to follow in August and September. The spotlight lately has been on Trump's endorsements in these contests, whether his anointed candidates will win or lose, and what that will say about his power as kingmaker in the Republican party. But that hyper focus overshadows another critical development: In one important respect at least, Trump has already won.

Weak-in-the-knees pantywaist through and through.
Pearls. Clutch.
We need to find and run DINO MAGA Donald Dems in ‘Rat primaries.
Until then we’re fighting half a battle.
They maybe fake MAGA supporters. I am not sure Trump trusts some of the people he is backing. He hopefully learned a lesson this last time.
Any politician can be lying. Calling themselves Republicans is no guarantee of anything. Calling themselves MAGA is no guarantee anything. Calling themselves Patriots is no guarantee of anything.
Our job is to figure out which ones are telling the truth - there is just no substitute.
There is always a bunch of people on FR urging everyone to quit voting for Republicans - and urging Trump to quit running as a Republican. They say he should start his own party - like the Patriot Party, or the MAGA Party.
But changing the name of the party solves NOTHING, because politicians can lie about being a Patriot or MAGA just as easily as they can lie about being a Republican.
We need to do a better job of figuring out who the honest ones are, regardless of party name - there is no substitute.
He is a political consultant ... a chameleon that can hide behind any color of liberal politics. That is what he is and what he will always be.
My Uncle Clarence lived to be 98, and was only slowed when he broke his hip after falling off his roof.
He decided that he needed to fix his roof, did so over a couple of days, then trimmed the tree that was scraping his roof. And only then did he lean out too far and fall off when the branch broke.
Put anyone's Uncle Clarence next to this "consultant", and one will see the difference between chameleons and and the original tough dudes.
To me, President Trump is like my Uncle Clarence - an original through and through. There is no scratching the surface to see if the paint scrapes off. It won't because it can't.
And remember - all this Trump hatred started when he became a Christian - not when he fought with the Democrats in NYC - but called out their sins.
That's when the press came out and hated him.
Good, maybe they can form a coalition to oust McCarthy.
I take it they didn’t ask his voters about the Trumpcines.
Trump has won the argument. Today you cannot be for open borders, perpetual war, being soft on China, soft on CRT, soft on Grooming, for Covid Tyranny, for “free” trade even with perpetual cheaters, and stand any chance in a Republican primary. Think how different that is compared to before.
Even though Trump is right on the issues and is the best one to run for President in the next election, we also realize he has often displayed lousy judgment in who he has chosen as advisors and in the candidates he has endorsed. Remember he endorsed Ben Sasse, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, Pierre Delecto, etc. So while I 100% support the Donald, I will look very carefully to make sure the candidates I support are real MAGA candidates and are not RINOs.
I agree. We have the info in front of us on how they vote and what there track record is.
