South Korea emerges as Quad alternative to India
Asia Times ^

South Korea has long stood out as a geopolitical anomaly – a rising power curiously punching well below its weight. A long-time US treaty ally, the Northeast Asian nation has at the same time cultivated extremely cordial, if not at times subservient, relations with neighboring China, a top trading partner.

Despite being a global economic dynamo and a leading military equipment exporter, South Korea has remained largely marginal in shaping the geopolitical landscape in its own Asian neighborhood.

Outgoing President Moon Jae-in’s chief foreign policy focus, if not obsession, has been his largely ineffectual engagement with North Korea, which has shown little interest in actual disarmament and denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

But the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the election of new conservative leadership in Seoul could reset South Korea’s place in the broader Indo-Pacific geopolitical landscape.

Great! South Korea can start pumping out Quads at reasonable
prices.

I’ll take one with a snow blade.

“I’ll take one with a snow blade.”

If my experience with South Korean motorcycles (Hyosung) is any indicator, you will not be very happy with that quad.
They started out with a better product than anyone thought they could or would, but their arrogant & non-responsive attitude at the distributer level pretty much killed the deal. Both for dealers and retail buyers.

South Korea I certainly an ally alongside Australia and Japan but make no mistake, they are no replacement for India. Getting India lined up with The Anglosphere + Europe+ Japan must be our top foreign policy objective over the next generation.

India is a natural ally but as usual, the idiots Biden and Blinken can’t keep themselves from mouthing off and offending partners needlessly. Harassing India about human rights, when they are governed by a rising nationalism was about as stupid as alienating the Saudis by harping on the Kashoggi affair then asking them if they would please produce more oil for us.

Fielding your foreign policy benchwarmers is no way to win the peace.

I was joking about the Quad, but South Korea does make great tractors.

South Korea can never afford to not have their full attention on the north. Can’t blame them but they are also well aware that if the CCP falls then so do the Kim’s.
