Will the Collapse of Russia Mean the End of the West?
American Thinker.com ^ | April 25, 2022 | Alex Maistrovoy

Russia's invasion of Ukraine was largely predictable but it also brought some surprises. It was quite expected that the current U.S. administration would try to draw Russia into the "Ukrainian swamp" in order to weaken and isolate it as much as possible. It was expected that the inexperienced and naive Ukrainian leader would trust the promises of the Biden team and let them to drag his country into a devastating gamble.

It was expected that Russia, seeking to restore its former empire, would use Western provocations to establish its presence in a weak and corrupt Ukraine. It was completely unexpected that instead of a modern, maneuverable, and highly organized Russian army, we saw poorly trained troops erasing entire cities from the face of the earth like nomadic hordes. A terrifying surprise has been the use by the Kremlin against its brothers in blood and faith of the Chechen and Syrian militants of the Wagner group. Finally, the biggest surprise was the desperate courage of the Ukrainians themselves and the high combat readiness of their armed forces.

This war will not end in the foreseeable future. Most likely, it will lead to the destruction of Ukraine and the extreme weakening of Russia, exhausted by excessive exertion of forces and sanctions.

The question is what goals should the West set for itself in this situation and should it strive for the complete destruction of Russia? Or, on the contrary, does it need a comparatively strong Russia?

The whole thing reminds me of late July 1914. The newspapers of the time were just as over-the-top in stirring the pot.

exhausted by excessive exertion of forces and sanctions.

A largely self-sufficient industrial base and by a factor of a couple the world's largest producer of munitions is not going to be exhausted by a war with lil' 'ol Ukraine even if Z is the modern day reincarnation of Churchill - which the corrupt friend of crackwhore indulging son of Joe is not.

And it is Western sanctions that are coming unglued faster than the big guy can stick his finger in the leaks in the dike.

Oh, and they still have every single last one of their nukes.

But collapse they will. This BIG WAR loving correspondent said so in the biggest neo-con rag of the age. I hope he is wearing his mask and is quadruple boosted.

How about leaving a corrupt former administrative province of Russia to the Russians and instead worrying about uh, well, the welfare of your own NATIONS and the threat from CHAYNA.

If Russia collapsed today, it wouldn’t mean much. The USSR collapsed in 1991 and here we are today dealing with a bully invading Russia. Russia gonna Russia.

Russia can collapse economically and militarily. The real control is via the intelligence agencies who are loyal to Putin.

Until the Russian mobs and former Soviet apparatus is swept away, nothing will change.

My solution after the weakened Russia gets rid of Putin for his debacle, offer whoever shows up NATO membership and drop the sanctions.

Alfred Thayer Mahan had it right, and the Chinese know this too, whoever conrols the Eurasian heartland will control th rest. A western linked Russia would do that.

Write a provocative enough headline and people will comment (whether or not they actually read the article). I doesn't make any difference if the article is good or not.

I don't think he's wrong about what was expected and what was unexpected in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, but I can't see Russia collapsing. I do see that Russia is in a sense a Western bulwark against China and a possible Middle Eastern caliphate, but I think that as a nation and a civilization, Russia has more resilience than he may believe it has.

No. The Biden White House believed Ukraine would fall quickly and Zelensky would flee. They had no intention of helping at the outset.

Trump for sure saw Russia as precisely that, a bulwark against China and Muslim expansionism. He came into office hoping to bring Russia on side against Iran and China (and Isis). The constant accusations that he was a Russian agent made that all but impossible, though I think Putin was smart enough to understand his intentions.

It’s quite likely that Putin would never have attempted to swallow Ukraine had Trump been successful. Very likely, in fact. What has happened instead is that Russia has been driven ever more firmly toward Iran and China. And Biden’s debacle in Afghanistan was the green light for the Ukraine operation.

When you are determined to stop cash flowing to your enemy, but still buy his most profitable and abundant export....

This whole situation is beyond comical to me.
