Yes, prevailing winds run west to east. Ukraine is around 800 miles across. The launcers mentioned are about 40 miles from the Ukraine border and can fire as much as 300 miles. Thus if used for nukes, the eastern third of Ukraine might be contaminated, and then it would spread to the western parts of Russia. Would Putin be that self-destructive. I suspect these are important grain and potatoe areas for Russia. On the other hand 2/3 rds of Ukraine might not be much affected.

Russia would be dropping fallout on almost all of western Europe if he nuked Ukraine. That would draw NATO directly into the war.

Does not really matter which way the “prevailing winds” take.
What matters is which direction is the wind taking at the time of impact.
Generally speaking, right now the winds are blowing due north to Russia. Later, the temps differentials between the Black Sea and the land will change and the wind might take a southwesterly direction toward Italy or northwest to Europe.
But if the Russians were to launch, I doubt they bother to care which direction the winds go - its just another weapon to them.
