The arrival of a USS Georgia submarine in the port of Gibraltar has sparked a diplomatic row between Spain and the US. The Spanish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that it has lodged an official protest with the US. The Spanish authorities wanted the submarine to anchor at the Rota naval base instead, where the US Georgia had already been based in August 2020. The reasons and the duration for the stopover of the submarine remain unknown.

They probably heart that rumor that Governor Abbott is sending illegal aliens back to Spain in submarines.

It’s a submarine. How would they even know?

But, but, but ... Biden and his WOKE fools at the Pentagon are just setting the stage for all out nuclear war.

China gets to wash their hands of the US AND Russia... in one quick move and our subs and countries near them - get wiped out in the bargain.

No she didn’t! She simply pulled over to ask directions.

UGM-133 Trident II (D5LE) 12,000 km (about 7,500 miles) United States, Operational

No need to get close.

Spain to Moscow Distance: 2,168.98 mi (3,490.64 km)”

As long as you don’t dock at the South Pole, you’re good.

From Moscow to the South Pole, it is 10,071.06 mi (16,207.81 km).

Yes; that makes more sense.

They probably want the tourist cash that the Brits will now get.

When I read the headline, I thought they were upset at USS Georgia being in Gibraltar because !. they claim Gibraltar as their own or 2. Georgia is nuclear powered. But on reading the blurb, they’re really upset because they’re losing the money they thought they’d get if she had stopped at Rota.

“I thought Gibraltar was a British outpost, not part of Spain.”

Spain has been trying to claim it as part of UK/EU negotiations related to Brexit.

Yep, there are others options besides GPS, but they’re so 20th century that they’re likely not used on Switchblades. Maybe they figured out that GPS can bet easily jammed, now... So newer stuff might be better. Maybe not, though.

US military GPS is a lot harder to jam than the civilian version. The US isn’t operating drones over Ukraine because the cowards in DC don’t want to be accused of being a combatant.

They got a few extra tourists back in 2016. My son was on the Newport News when something broke. They docked in Gibralter and had to wait several days for a replacement part. So some of the crews’ significant others got together and travelled to Gibralter and toured the rock with their guys.

Interesting. Either they need some unscheduled maintenance (unlikely) or they’re picking up or exchanging weapons we don’t want the Spaniards to know about, like nukes.

“As long as you don’t dock at the South Pole, you’re good.”

There’s a continent kinda in the way.

But from, say, anywhere within a thousand miles of the South African coast ought to work.

Without GPS the drone’s cameras stop working, right? Following terrain is too difficult for today’s operators - sort of like paper map reading

I’m sure the sub’s crew would also much rather get liberty at Rota than The Rock.

Makes me think there is some security or maintenance issue at play here. I wonder if the RN can pull a D5 Trident out of a tube there? Or maybe they are prepping for a covert mission and Gibraltar is just more secure for a pit stop?

GPS is not the only guidance method for military drones. And with commercial drones you can typically disable the GPS and fly them VFR through a cell phone connection or line of sight.

With commercial drones you have to disable the GPS in order to use them in designated ‘no fly’ zones. There are legitimate reasons to do this such as inspecting a building, surveying, etc.

That's good. As long as they are aware we are within striking distance locked and loaded. Yesterday one of their TV hosts was laughing about vaporizing New York. Well first, there is no guarantee their missile will actually make it to New York. A lot of things can happen in between. Secondly the idiot thinks Moscow and St Petersburg will be left standing !
