Florida seeks 100% renewable electricity goals by 2050

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Florida utilities would gradually increase their electricity to 100% renewable by 2050 under a proposed rule unveiled Thursday by the state’s agriculture commissioner.

The proposed rule is an outgrowth of a lengthy court battle involving dozens of young people who claim Florida is violating their constitutional rights by continuing to promote use of fossil fuels that drive climate change. Similar lawsuits have been filed in other states.

The rule announced by Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, a Democratic candidate for governor this year, came following pressure from young people represented by the nonprofit Our Children’s Trust who filed a petition seeking the proposal. It’s the first of this magnitude in Florida, which is particularly vulnerable to climate impacts such as coastal flooding, stronger hurricanes and excessive heat.

Although the rule is not final and could face several challenges, Fried said it is “a monumental first step” in curbing climate-altering greenhouse gases that flow from utilities when they burn coal and natural gas.

“This is one of the most urgent issues of our time,” Fried said at a news conference in Miami. “We can’t afford to deny this reality and the urgency of what is happening to our state.”

The rule petition was signed by more than 200 young people, including 22-year-old Delaney Reynolds. She said at the news conference Thursday that the rule is a start at tackling one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions in power plants.

“Today, Florida can begin to address the core causes of climate change,” Reynolds said. “We have no time to waste.”

2050. That’s the ticket. Take credit for it now, leave it up to somebody else to do later.

I always turn to farmers for the best energy knowledge and advice, the same way I turn to my utility for the best agricultural knowledge and advice.

The funny thing is that hydro power is SOLAR power. The sun-driven water cycle dumps rain and snow in the mountains which powers the hydro generators. I’d bet that hydro, for the same output, requires a LOT less concrete, steel, metals, and rare earth minerals that either solar or wind.

Egads, I didn't read this far before. I quit reading when found out the Ag Commissioner is proposing this. The only thing worse than the Ag Commissioner butting her nose into something she knows nothing about is giving in to pressure from know-nothing CHILDREN. This is the ultimate stupidity.

“The 2050 goal demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of the scope involved.”

I have worked with people like that. Their goal was not to implement something but impress bosses with their forward looking thinking. They got promoted and nothing happened to their Replace-everything-by-2000 plan.

Same thing here. These liberals are idealist show-dogs.

Not unless you count Nuclear as “Renewable”. My brother is pretty high up in FPL. This ought to make him laugh.

Your looking for the EROI for hydro vs solar and wind. That’s the energy returned on energy invested. I can help with that.

Nukes are in the 70s Hydro in the 40s and wind 20 to teens. Solar is also in the 20s now this paper is from 2014 technology has improved in nearly a decade same for wind larger turbines put out more power using less materials as wind scales with the cube root of blade diameters. Nukes are the answer for long term human energy use. Fast spectrum reactors will.Absolutely be needed in the next 50 years. There’s only 1.5 trillion bbls of technically recoverable oil left the world is burning 96.6 million bbl PER DAY that’s 46 years left till all that oil is gone. I’m a semi retired petroleum geologist have worked on 6 of 7 continents looking for, exploiting and producing total hydrocarbon systems. So take it as a 20+ year PhD plus post doctorate level assessment we habe 46 years left less when not if the growing new middle classes of Asia India and Africa all start to burn more per capita. Human’s must transition as rapidly as possible and technically feasible to nuclear plus wind plus solar plus Hydro storage compressed air storage systems and cryo air storage systems. Batteries are only ever going to work for niche markets such as remote off grid homes. My cabin has solar plus a Tesla power wall it’s miles from a power line works great not cheap but it will power the cabin for three days with no sun which is rare for northern New Mexico in high altitude. Geomechanical storage is also technically capable of storing multiple gigawatt hours for one tenth the cost of pumped hydro. I just did a test well for a company out of Midland that’s in stealth mode right now injecting brine over a mile underground storing it at 10000+ psi than when you need peer later you open the valve and all that water rushes back up the well bore spins the turbine pump backwards at 3600 rpm and boom 60hz power with a round trip efficiency is in the mid 80s since no dams need to be made ,no land cleared and no supper storage reservoir like giga scale pumped hydro cost is one tenth or less. Geomech will fundamentally change the power storage market once approvals for it. Because pressure is so high smaller amounts of water are needed for a given megawatt hour as much as ten to 20 times less than pumped hydro with a 200 meter delta between the lakes. Gravity does the storage as you inject fluids under a impermeable layer you literally lift all the earth above it displacing water into that space when you open the valve the entire mass of that lifted area pushes the water back out at thousands of psi simply elegant. The types of rocks to hold fluids under pressures exist in most sedimentary basins and with the identical technology to hydro stimulate shales you can fracture igneous rocks to hold geopressure fluids so pretty much anywhere on earth you could find deep enough rocks to store pressurized fluids in. The idea is genius. I was the geologist who planned and then ops geo the rig while it was drilled. It’s a 2 megawatt test well full sized they will be 10 to 100 megawatts each and you can stack them 24 to a well paid 50 feet apart directionally drilling outwards like a spider web. 2400 megawatts in a square mile area in a 10 acre sized pad is the design point. That’s an enormous amount of power lifting a square mile of earth 6” stores an enormous amount of power. We used satellite radar accurate to the mm to watch the earth move up and down around the well site in a 4d scan it looks like the earth is breathing. As it heaves and falls it’s something to see in step moving video. The actual surface effects are too small for the naked eye to see.

The Florida agriculture commissioner is one of the few elected rats so of course you get this kind of BS from that office.
