The Republican-led Florida Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would eliminate a special tax district that has allowed Walt Disney Co. to govern the land where its theme parks sit, as lawmakers target the company for opposing legislation restricting classroom instruction on gender and sexuality.
The measure still needs to pass the GOP-led House, which is expected to approve it. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who called for lawmakers to consider such a bill in a special session he convened this week, has made clear he would sign it.
The measure potentially delivers a blow to the company’s operations in the state. The special district, created in 1967 and known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District, exempts Disney from a host of regulations and certain taxes and fees related to emergency services and road maintenance. It saves Disney tens of millions of dollars a year, according to a person familiar with the company’s finances who studied the issue over a decade ago.
On Wednesday, Disney declined to comment on the bill

I can understand a special tax status in 1967, when Disney World was being but that was over 50 years ago.
Take a look at Disney’s institutional ownership.
I don’t think Disney taking it in the shorts will bother them.
I agree. But it’s still nice to see them take a hit.
If the South had won, we might still be fighting using the rules of gentlemen.
As is, it is time to go all Abraham Lincoln on them: invade and destroy. Treat the big Disney compound as a conquered territory.
No matter how this plays out. Disney law suits, etc. It is absolutely the last thing a board of directors with any integrity would want to see engulfing the time and attention of management. As opposed to say . . . growth and profits and customer brand satisfaction, or new markets. Yeah. fight a convoluted state tax court battle, that’s the ticket! Surely totally worth it.
People are canceling Disney trips and Disney Plus subscriptions
Oh--so now they decline to comment....
Wow. This is way effingoverdue
Id put it in a fund to pursue pedos and groomers for sake of language, in case libs did not understand
It is the prerogative of the states and cities to revoke those special tax incentives at any time and for any reason. And it is the prerogative of the business to move elsewhere if they don't like it.
I am not allowed to exempt my property from fees and regulations by saying “Well, I only use my own resources!”
No company should either.
I can’t buy a new full auto rifle. Local security and PMC’s do all the time.
We decided to make companies “person’s” under the law, yet give those persons special rights and protections.
If I steal or kill someone, I go to jail. Does a large company get shut down (as in all assets seized) for the same?
We have used all of the major streaming services at one time or another including Disney +.
Heck, we could start and cancel within one month if there is only one show or movie that we are interested in. Easy peasy.
They have no loyalty to us so why should we to them?
And if we are lucky we can get in on some promotional discount which is usually the case if we haven't subscribed for a few months. Lol. :)
We can play the game too.
P;
RIGHT NOW, DOWN 5.2%
lol
Disney may come to regret picking this fight over that law.
They may live to regret picking fights with DeSantis. We’ll see.
Time for them to pay their fair share
Well I could tell you one advantage; it would no longer be a pedo’s Paradise that can investigate itself outside police would now be able to come in and investigate.
