April 18 (Reuters) - Russia said on Monday it had launched mass strikes overnight on the Ukrainian military and associated military targets, using its air force, missile forces, artillery and air defence systems to hit hundreds of targets across its southern neighbour.
The Russian defence ministry said in a statement that air-launched missiles had destroyed 16 Ukrainian military facilities overnight, including five command posts, a fuel depot and three ammunition warehouses, as well as Ukrainian armour and forces.
It said those strikes took place in the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions and in the port of Mykolayiv, and that the Russian air force had launched strikes against 108 areas where it said Ukrainian forces and armour were concentrated.
The defence ministry accused Ukraine of planning "monstrous provocations" with mass civilian casualties designed to cast Russian forces in a bad light.
Specifically, it said Ukraine was plotting to shell Orthodox churches and cathedrals in various Ukrainian regions on the night of April 23, the eve of Orthodox Easter which is celebrated by most Ukrainians and Russians. It said it had evidence to back its assertions but did not provide any. There was no immediate response to the allegations from Ukraine.

Communist aggression on display. Attack a country for no reason. Destroy its cities. Kill its people. If Reagan or Trump were president this war would have ended in one week or less, if it even started. It would have ended with Russia withdrawing or the destruction of the Russian military. Nuclear threats to either Reagan or Trump would have meant absolutely ZERO. That’s why Putin wouldn’t have risked a conventional confrontation or would have ended it very quickly.

Russia went in because they believe it is their national interest, and that the reward will exceed the cost.
The POTUS would not matter.
No POTUS past, present or future is going to fight Russia for Ukraine.
What a sad situation. It never had to be like this.
The sinking of the Moskva threw gasoline on the fire. I am not surprised about the size and ferocity of this response.

Zelenskyy will have to concede Crimea, Donbass and Lutansk. Then Putin may come to the table especially if Zelenskyy asks for international recognization of disputed territories.
But Zelenskyy is not going to do that and Russian will keep in with its war despite suffering 20k dead. They did not suffer that many casualties during the war in Afghanistan and that was during the Soviet Union with 2x the population of today's Russia.
Madness, what can Putin expect to truly gain? Short of an eventual withdrawal Putin is facing a partisan war for the rest of his life.

The Ukrainians have over 21,000 dead in Mariupol alone. There total casualties are considerably more than that. I don’t buy any of the BS from the Daily Mail BTW. I get my info from more reliable US sources which you don’t have access to.
Zelensky is going to have to cave because it looks like Russia is starting to deploy their frontline assets. Russia will have Crimea, Donbass and Lutansk.
And Putin will be more than happy to have the rest of the country as neutral as he does not want to deal it. He knows how the people feel there and will not stir the apple cart. He is getting what he wants.

There was a WWII cartoon of an American GI talking to an Italian farmer. The vineyard had shell craters in it and his yard, the mans house was blown to pieces and his trees were just stumps. The GI told the man “look at it this way. Your fields are plowed, your trees are pruned, and your house has air conditioning.” Russia is not blowing up there ground.

I fully believe that Russian troops are under strict orders to destroy as much of Ukraine as possible as quickly as possible so that the Moscow May 9 military parades can claim some victories.
It is my hope that despite the carnage and indiscriminate killing by Russian troops, that in the propaganda war for the hearts and minds of the world, that there will soon be Ukrainian videos of Russian troops and equipment being destroyed.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine will want to negotiate a truce as too much blood has been spilled and neither sides wants to look like it has lost. That leaves only three possible outcomes. One side will has to destroy so much of the other that if admits defeat and sues for peace (not likely). A second alternative is that the international community gets so tired of the bloodshed that it steps in and stops the war through troops on the ground, no fly zones, and dividing up the contested land. The third and most likely outcome will be a situation like after Russia took Crimea, where there will be continual war, but not enough to register on the nightly news of other countries. This third possibility is what will likely happen with a North/South Korea situation with not declarations of peace and active (though minor) war continuing for decades.
When the Korean like war transitions to no more major invasions, I hope that the world will flood Ukraine with money to rebuild all the cities, infrastructure and economy that Russia has destroyed.
On the path to a division of Ukraine, I hope that Ukraine will attack and destroy much of the Crimea naval bases and military facilities on the Russian side of the Russia Ukraine border to the point that Russia will have decades of rubble reminders of its stupid invasion.
