Depending on the side you choose to believe, the ship was either hit by 2x R-360 "Neptun" ASMs, or suffered a catastrophic ammunition fire. You decide.

You’re right - what used to sit next to the superstructure?

I can see the ad for this now.
Lightly used, may need minor repairs, sold “as is”...

I served aboard a destroyer, and we never allowed our ship to look like that. It was haze gray and underway all the time.

Yeah I mean are these ships really sitting ducks now? Is there a capable defense against missles

In the fwiw department, there is a very high possibility that two nuclear weapons sunk with that ship.

Very stormy and rough seas.
I can see how such conditions could contribute to it sinking.

I keep hearing this and I’m not saying you’re wrong as it very plausible but have you seen any good sources at the root of this?

It is possible that both happened, say a fire in the
munitions locker distracted the crew and kept them
from a seamless defense.

I am skeptical of that image. Too bright, wrong lighting, looks photo-shopped. Waterline and aft doesn’t match.

Not nice if you’re onboard.
Or, presuming you are not as short on empathy as you appear, are you just rooting for whatever team plays Putin?

The Russians won’t have any trouble recovering those. The Black Sea is relatively shallow.

I think that’s just the color of the nonskid.
On U.S. vessels it’s colored black.

Hi.
Jane’s Defense Weekly is a good source for ship capabilities and armament.
Plus, Soviet doctrine stated the first use of nukes, and this ship (and subs) have the capability.
Do I know for sure, no. Would I bet on it, yes. And give odds.

Saw that too. Good catch—you may be right about the abandon ship order.
