Yes, we see the outcomes - but some people still believe this is temporary. The flight of the middle-class normals from the NYC metro area (including northeastern NJ) isn’t temporary; many are leaving the area forever. It is too expensive for middle-aged workers with stagnant wages with limited job prospects in a high-tax area (many employers left, taking their jobs AND tax contributions with them), and offers even less for young workers looking for viable employment.
