No reasonable person can believe that a nation founded on the principle that people have a right to independence must thereafter prevent people from gaining independence.
It is contradictory to believe such a thing.
I’ve always thought it important, that our current constitutional union was established by the secession of nine States from the supposedly “perpetual union” formed under the Articles of Confederation. The Articles required unanimous consent for any amendment - and yet the Constitution was initially adopted by only nine ratifying States (with the remaining four free to join, or not, as they saw fit).
