Ukrainian soldiers advancing north or east from Kiev would have been the first ones to discover Russian atrocities against civilians. So I'm not surprised.

US & Canadian troops routinely shot Waffen SS troops trying to surrender after they killed Canadian and US prisoners in Normandy.

I seriously doubt Ukrainian forces are being better treated by the Russians.

I would also point out that troops are not under any requirement to accept surrender if the captured troops cannot be secured.
