TRAVERSE CITY — Passengers are lining up to fly to Traverse City, but airlines are having trouble lining up enough crews to pilot their planes. The result will be fewer commercial flights landing at Cherry Capital Airport this summer.
“We’re not going to see as many flights as we had before,” Cherry Capital Airport Northwest Regional Airport Authority CEO Kevin Klein said this week.
“The number of flights and the number of aircraft that are available to fly is all going to be dependent on the amount of crews and pilots and flight attendants that the airlines have.”
Bad weather over the weekend delayed some spring break travelers, including some local residents returning home to northern Michigan. But that short-term problem pales alongside the growing disruption of the nationwide shortage of commercial pilots.
“There has been a looming pilot shortage for the last decade in the United States, that going through COVID, it became an actual pilot shortage,” United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said while testifying at a December hearing of the U.S. Senate’s Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.

I heard about some guys learning to takeoff and fly on simulators. They ignored the whole landing thing. Maybe their friends are available.
I’m pretty sure it’s ongoing elsewhere and in other aspects of the whole airline industry. Hiring on basis of ethnicity, gender, and who knows what other “identifications”.” I’m not flying anymore due to this.
Rough flights (not just a little turbulence I’m talking ROUGH and sketchy takeoffs and landings) used to be not super common and now I’d say it’s about one out of ever five or six flights.
Now we have a whole new influx coming in and no processing or vetting at all.
“Can’t fill the shortage with diversity pilots.”
Exactly what I was thinking.
I am in the aviation industry and can say I know pilots who are hired for their plumbing or skin color. They were not good pilots, either.
It is not just a pilot problem. Commercial aviation requires s certain number of flight attendants depending on plane type. If the threshold isn’t met, the plane stays parked..
Maybe they ain’t got no jet fuel.
Last week in Lauderdale they said it was bad weather.
We didn’t have bad weather, I’m 9 miles from the airport.
I'm an airline pilot and this is basically it. For many years the regional airlines have had their business model as an internship where they paid as little as they could because they knew pilots wanted to build flight time to get to the major airlines. They were awful jobs but they could get away with paying nothing at the time. There are still plenty of pilots out there but the airlines don't want to pay what it takes to hire them. Because of the feast or famine nature of the airline business most pilots have other occupations as fallbacks. You can't be a total idiot and be a pilot (present company excluded of course), so many are making more in other occupations than they can make flying.
The is not now and there never has been a pilot shortage. There's a lack of desire on the part of airlines to pay a competitive wage. If they want pilots then they know exactly how to find them, pay them what it costs to hire them. If the airlines don't want to do that then their planes can sit.
Well when college admissions, scholarships, medical schools, law schools all admit and grant based on those same criteria of gender, orientation, skin shade, why would any other industry not do the same? They sure don’t want to be sued.
Seems like a pedestrian bridge in Miami a few years ago failed before it could even open due to lousy ngineering based on all of these external components and not real ability.
I’m done with flying. It means we either sacrifice the time to drive to long distances or we just don’t go.
DON’T FILL THE SHORTAGE WITH DIVERSITY PILOTS!
Waddlemart is paying starting truck drivers up to $110k a tear.beats some pilot jobs.
Fauci and the libs have broken so many minds.
Buck Sexton @BuckSexton
Just had the most aggressive mask fascist flight attendant ever, on Delta
Zealously enforced the “mask up between bites” rule, constantly harassed people (yes, me too) to mask up *during food service while they ate and drank*

Biggest LIE in aviation,
“Hi, I’m from the F.A.A. and I’m here to help.
I stopped flying commercial during covid. I refuse to be treated in such a despicable manner. Of course, airline pilots see no problem operating aircraft like that for the money.
When you see organizations like “Women in Aviation” then you just know the purpose.
“DON’T FILL THE SHORTAGE WITH DIVERSITY PILOTS!”
The United pilots are already petty and stupid enough!
I received this FReepmail from Bat Guano. It doesn’t say much of a United pilot who cannot understand typos and feels the need to comment about them.
