Russia Last Stand in Ukraine & Demographics | Peter Zeihan

Demographics is one of the cornerstones of how we understand the world here at Zeihan on Geopolitics. Few countries have had as difficult a series of demographic challenges as the Russians.
Beginning with World War I, the Russians faced serious demographic headwinds. The Soviet famine between the mass casualty events of the two World Wars did the population few favors. The move toward urbanization and the packing in of Russian families into state-built tenement multifamily housing pushed birthrates down. As did the economic downtown of the late Soviet era.
Russia's population is unlikely to grow again in any significant manner. They're not alone here; South Korea, Japan, most of Europe have terminal demographies. But Russia also faces a mix of relatively low life expectancy leading to a caving out of expertise and the general Russian "brain trust."
We see this everywhere. In Russian industry and innovation. In their crumbling infrastructure. And most important, in their government and military. There is not an emergent cadre of young leaders ready to step up to the plate. The last time Russia could boast a bunch of starry (or hammer-and-cycle-eyed) youths with big plans for the future? The late 70s and 1980s. Putin's generation. And after decades of intimidating or eliminating and arresting rivals, there are precious Russians left who have meaningful statecraft experience that were not brought up in the Soviet Era.
Zeihan is the author of three critically acclaimed books, The Accidental Superpower, The Absent Superpower, and Disunited Nations. His fourth book, The End of the World Is Just the Beginning: Mapping the Collapse of Globalization, will be published in June.Peter Zeihan: What Is China Learning From The Ukraine Invasion?

Related to the above, WWI and WWII destroyed the centuries-old European colonial system.
Russian men in particular have very unhealthy lifestyles. They drink and smoke too much, causing shorter lifespans, and then there is the issue of the high AIDs rate in Russia. As in many other places, sex, marriage and procreation have become separated in Russia resulting in a low birth rate. Unlike the West, poor people from Third World countries aren’t moving to Russia, as they aren’t wanted there.

Goes back to well before the 20th Century to explain Russian mindset.
The Commies killed the Russian Christian leaders without mercy, and many believers, too.
Yet here they are again.
Leads me to believe that the Russian people just hunker down under the driving rainstorm of adversity, and just keep on keeping on.
We in the West have trouble seeing this because life doesn't cr@p on us as much as it has over there.
Sending young men to fight a totally stupid war in Ukraine isn’t helping either.
Russia also has the highest abortion rate in the world.
The biggest problem is that the decline is uneven. Siberia only has 30 million people now. Half what it did in the Soviet years.
That is too low to control the territory. There are already reports of secret Chinese mining and forestry operations going on for years within their borders before any Russian notices.
It wasn't an offer by Biden to ensure peace, it was part of their joint plan for the dismemberment of Ukraine (and Biden's destruction of what's left of the US Constitution and Bill of Rights) that Biden and Putin were in total agreement on. And the Saudis sidled up to Putin as soon as Biden pulled the plug on US military aid and precipitously pulled out of Afghanistan. Biden doesn't work for us and never has worked for us.
And a year from now when this "crisis" and all the pumped-up fear of war is in our rear view mirror, the media adulation for his brilliant diplomacy and visionary statesmanship will lead to a marked spike in the price of the stock of companies that manufacture and sell barf bags.
You need to get out more or something.
Russian fertility rates are only slightly below fertility rates for native-born American white and black women. They are also above much of Western Europe whites and also Japanese and Koreans. Its a global issue. Abortion and post-modern politics and lifestyle have everything to do with this all over the world.
Our globalist masters in the USA “solve” this problem through immigration - particularly illegal. Europe is also in the process of replacing itself with African and mideast immigration.
Russia and other countries, like Hungary, have refused to do this - which is why the globalist NWO-types and Wall Street hate them.
“Demographic doom-porn” in its present narrative, is the worst kind of statist, globalist propaganda, promoted by people like Zeihan. Its causes, influences, consequences and who it benefits go completely unquestions.
The "Russian Christian leaders" around now are just Putin's talking point spewers, and can scarcely be expected to be anything else, as they live in a police state.
“Leads me to believe that the Russian people just hunker down under the driving rainstorm of adversity, and just keep on keeping on.”
Russians are used to hardship and privation. They “endure;” it’s in their DNA.
“Russia also has the highest abortion rate in the world.”
Yes, I had read that. It surprised me, actually.
Hungary has experimented with government encouragement to have kids, with some success.
75 years of marxism does incredible damage to the spirit, ethos and morality of any society. It will take them another 75 years to climb out of it.
Thankfully, we live in the West, where we're safe from police states.
Oh, wait...

Nice string of buzzwords and propaganda.
Russia has a negative growth rate overall -- but the ethnic Russians are responsible for that. Within what's left of the old Russian Empire, there's a shift toward the occupied peoples. The same thing is happening in China. In both cases, it means their nuclear arsenals will be in the hands of Islamists, luckily by that time those nuclear weapons will *only* have perhaps forty or fifty years left of shelf life.
Unlike the West, poor people from Third World countries aren’t moving to Russia, as they aren’t wanted there.
Unlike the West, poor people from Third World countries aren’t moving to Russia, asthey aren’t wantedno one in their right mind would move there.
I look up FACTS. You can look them up yourself.
I try not to speculate on wild theories about Islamists taking over Russia’s nukes in 50 years.
