Having spent so much time there, the info from the link reminded me of some very heartbreaking conversations with a number of Russian families over the years.
We had *Unregistered Russian pastor’s (as their evangelical and protestant churches were officially not allowed to exist), who had been raped and nearly killed, doing their required time in the RUS Army.
Not the worst things encountered over there, but hard to work through -
It's called "dedovshchina", and apparently all new conscripts face it at some level, with being gang-raped or murdered being at the worst end of the spectrum. They have a very high suicide rate.
