I believe it was Sputnik 2 that carried Laika, a dog into space. Of course they had no way of getting her back, so there she died. It seemed that more people were outraged by her death than all those killed in the short-lived Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
I can understand it in a way. I place way more value on my dog’s life than I do about the lives of many people I read about.

There’s a huge difference between starving to death and being shot and killed, pretty much instantly. Death by starvation is a long, drawn out torture.
