Those old vehicles are pretty rusty for a conflict that hasn’t been going on for very long.
That “rust” is what happens when the aluminum parts of an armored vehicle burn, leaving the steel. One night of rain gives you rust after that.
Have you noticed the flames when a tank turret is popped off of the hull after an ATGM strike? At least the crew doesn’t feel it for long.

Because the Russian generals have been gun decking their readiness reports for decades and stealing everything that wasn’t nailed down. I’m surprised any of it is running at all.
Their equipment is crap, their troops are poorly trained undisciplined peasants, and their logistical tail is easy pickings for every pissed off Ukrainian with a rifle.
I hope not a single one of those bastards makes it home in one piece.

Really? Have you never seen a burned out car right after the fire or even 24 hours afterwards?
Burned out, not rusty
Supposedly they were rusty before the conflict started.🤔
Russian equipment has looked pretty neglected and rusty in general since at least 2002, and there is no requirement that they have to sand, paint, buff, and detail it prior to invasions to insure that it is spiffy. North Korea’s Navy has been looking very rough. In fact, even our stuff has been looking kind of shabby too, in recent years, though not quite as bad. In kleptocracies , the folks at the top often get richer by squeezing everything they can (see what Biden is doing to our oil reserves) from maintenance, food for troops, etc.
Rust is oxidized iron or steel. Oxidation can result from leaving the bear metal out in the elements over time, or very quickly as a result of fire. Have you ever seen what a burned out automobile looks like the next day?
Fire does that
