Rate of state legislative incumbents facing primary challengers doubles in Idaho compared to recent years

More state legislative incumbents are facing primary challenges in Idaho this year than at any point since at least 2014. Seventy-five incumbents are seeking re-election this year, 61.3% of whom (46) are running in contested primaries. From 2014 to 2020, the percentage of incumbents in contested primaries hovered at around half that rate, ranging from 32 to 34%.

Of those 46 incumbents in contested primaries, 45 are Republicans, and one – Rep. James Ruchti – is a Democrat.

Looking beyond incumbents in contested primaries, the total number of primaries also increased this year to its highest level compared to previous cycles, driven entirely by an increase in Republican contests.

These figures come from Ballotpedia’s analysis of post-filing deadline competitiveness statistics. The filing deadline for candidates running for state or federal office in Idaho this year was March 11. Candidates filed to run for the state’s 35 Senate and 70 House seats.

Here are some other highlights from this year’s filings:

Of the 105 seats up for election, 32.3% are open, meaning no incumbent is in the running. This is the largest percentage of open seats since at least 2014. Newcomers are guaranteed to win these open seats, meaning at least one-third of the Idaho Legislature will be new to their seats in the 2023 legislative session.

My wife has some friends who moved to Idaho from kalifornia. They moved to Idaho because that's what hordes of kalifornians are doing. Everything kalifornians touch turns to dung. Idaho should be careful with these mongrels lest Idaho turns into another dung heap like Oregon, Washington, Kolorado, Austin, etc.

That said, this surge in would be politicians might be a dangerous thing. Just saying.

The RINOs must all be challenged. The state legislatures hold the key to checking a corrupt federal government and rigged elections through a constitutional convention if necessary. Something must be done.

Idaho has some Republican state legislators that need to go. They’re the ones who have been blocking the grocery sales tax repeal for years, and blocked the constitutional carry bill as well (which did finally pass).

As long as they’re not replaced by communist Democrats, we should be ok.
😊

I certainly hope you haven’t bought into the insanity being pushed by Convention of States.

To wit, “something has to be done”, “absolutely nothing could go wrong with a Convention of States”, “we have the rules that prove it”, etc etc.

Let’s look at reality. Members of the Congress, The Supreme Court, and the Executive Branch our elected servants, take a sacred oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. We know there are very few of those elected officials that actually live and vote as if their oath matters.

FACT: It is not the Constitution that is the problem.

Fact: Amending the Constitution will not place any more pressure on those oath breaking individuals to restore the Republic as the founders designed it.

Fact: The only runaway that will be seen in a Constitutional Convention will be the liberal media running away with the present document and presenting a litany of new age ideas in an entirely new Constitution and appropriate amendments in a new Bill of Rights that will be the final nail in the coffin of Liberty.

Fact: The delegates will be running what may appear to be a Convention but media influence will really be in charge and the Constitution and “We the People” will be the victims.

Indeed something should be done!!! I’m not in the camp proposing to convene a Convention where the document that clearly is NOT the problem will be examined as if it is.

Elected officials are the problem and only an educated voting public is capable of ridding itself of what the up till now uneducated public are voting for. How else do we end up with an endless supply of incumbent big spenders who haven’t even read the Constitution much less pay it any heed?
