The Department of Justice on Thursday announced the arrest of 60-year-old Mark Robert Unkenholz of Hanover, Maryland
An NSA engineer specializing in encryption technology, between February 14, 2018, and June 1, 2020, ...Unkenholz on 13 occasions emailed classified information to a friend who was employed outside NSA. Like all NSA affiliates, Unkenholz held a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) security clearance, and he used this access to email classified information via personal, unclassified emails..... This is a gross violation of security policies and federal law. The friend is identified only as "R.F." in the DOJ indictment, she apparently worked for defense contractors.
From April 2016 to June 2019, "R.F." held Top Secret/SCI clearance. She then switched companies, and from July 2019 to January 2021, she lacked any security clearances.
The U.S. government defines "Top Secret" as "information, the unauthorized disclosure of which reasonably could be expected to cause 'exceptionally grave damage to national security." The very sensitive SCI caveat is even more restrictive. This could not have been a mistake. At NSA, as in all our intelligence agencies, classified information does not travel on the same networks as unclassified information. Indeed, there’s a whole separate network just for TS/SCI information. When Unkenholz took classified information and placed it in his personal email, switching networks, to send to his friend on 13 occasions, he did so with intent.

Yeah, but it’s no big deal. Hillary Clinton did the same thing and no punishment was forthcoming.
That sounds Extremely Careless, but I can’t imagine any reasonable prosecutor who would press charges. /Hillary
I wonder how intent is determined to be present in one case but not another. Oh, that’s right, you just look at the last name. If it’s Clinton, no intent.
Could have taken the whole server home. No need to email anything. Then pay a private company the erase it. FBI will have no problem.
In the movies, there would be a “cleaner” to take care of such people.
You could nab a lot of traitors at the white house and congress.
Shoulda registered Democtat, transsexual, and Vegan. Driving a Chevy Volt might help too.
I think the “cleaner” is the guy who disposes of the body and cleans up the blood. If I recall the killer is referred to as “a logistics specialist” or something of that type.
The language is probably specific to whatever organization has the business transacted. If it’s a Clinton related firm, it’s a “suicide technician.”
Not good.
Background checks for TS/SCI clearances go into every aspect of the person’s life, including that of their family and friends.
Who did that friend “R.F.” know ?
when there is no example made there is no deterrence.
The entire clearance thing is a joke. The US passed out TS/SCI clearances to many prior USSR citizens who came here in 1991 or later and took up US citizenship. That is all that is really required: US citizenship. They still pass out such clearances to Chinese and Indian nationals who take up US citizenship.
Back in 1986, I worked with an USAF OSI office on a project and learned that as the OSI would listen in on phone conversations at TS/SCI facilities that an OSI agent could be granted clearances to so much information that is otherwise restricted to anyone else as to make the OSI a major security breach. I also learned that within two days every secret of that facility would be exposed in those phone conversations. People really are that stupid.
Use the HRC classified materiel posession defense, seems to be working so far.
The shtstorm started back when opm took over ssbi background clearance checks. It seems like a logical move at streamlining the process but the military officials who were conducting background investigations should have gone with the package over to opm, but Gov’t employee unions probably nixed the logic.
If mark had been sending the info to “bruce” all would be ok.
“She/R.F.”
Honey-pot? Chinese???
This Nation is so dead.
Frankly I don’t know what to call our nation anymore. I suppose saying it’s Obama’s Transformation of America” says it best he was always proclaiming.
Hah! Laws are for little people ! I wonder who his friend works for.
