We've been cycling Army and National Guard units there for training the Ukrainians for years. It actually started in the 90s under the "Partnership for Peace" program.

I'm pretty sure this is part of the point that Putin has been trying to make (about the US bellying its way to Russia's front door).

Neither NATO nor the US have been any threat to Russia. Putin would have to worry only if we lined up a couple of million men for Barbarossa II. And the likelihood of that is just about zero with 30 members in NATO.

The constant yammering about Russia's "fears" is baloney. In the past 250 years Russia has had two serious invasions from the West. In the same interval it has attacked its neighbors in Eastern Europe and around the Black and Baltic Seas at least 25 times.
