You’re right natural gas is less important in the spring and summer, the rolling blackouts, etc. will still be an issue, so will lack of gas for cooking, hotwater, etc....

Defending the criminal thug country here is like supporting the BLMers who sued because they were pepper sprayed while burning and looting.

--- "The Group of Seven major economies have agreed to reject Moscow's demand to pay for Russian natural gas exports in rubles, the German energy minister said Monday."

Often what is in the news is intended to obscure what is "not" in the very same news. Sins of omission, so to speak.

What the Associated Press reports from the "Group of Seven" is a matter of currency. Now comes the unasked and unreported question.

In what currency and at what exchange rate and through what currency transfer mechanism will they pay?

Pay they will. It is only a matter of time.

In the meanwhile, broadcast the "nudge" that they WON'T PAY! In rubles. Euros, eh? Maybe dollars?

Irrespective of political stances and opinions, money is fungible. If it can't go one way, it will go another way. What is not fungible is energy; it is either on or off. That's what the Associated Press and the Group of Seven didn't mention....

That sounds tough and all but what will they do when Russia turns off the gas?

This is the consequence of making themselves so dependent on Russia to meet their energy needs. Trump warned them. They just laughed.

Freepers are too funny!

Biden says we will be supplying EU with gas. To eventually replace 30% of what they get from Russia. Over the next five years I think it was?

Europe is facing a hard winter.

Exactly! Remember When Trump tried to sell them our gas? But no.

Sorry, what was done to the truckers was a major turning point from my perspective. The “west” has absolutely no moral authority. If Russia is a Criminal thug country that’s fine because they are fighting against many other Criminal thug countries. Their are none righteous in this war.

Winter is about over.

Russia lost the initiative at war and now loses leverage.

If I have to prepay at the pump, the Germans should too.

With respect, I didn't read anyone here defending Russia. The comments seem to be about Realpolitick and pragmatic reality. Some one has something for sale. Some one wants to buy something.

Europe's "zero carbon" politics won't work in winter, when someone needs to burn something -- fuel of some sort -- to keep warm. And Europe's "zero carbon" game won't keep German business humming along.

Personally I would love to see thugs everywhere -- including North America -- toppled. Throwing open the Overton Window allows a breath of fresh air into things.

Good thoughts to you, along with a tiny disagreement.

The G-7 declared economic war on Russia freezing their assets, destroying their economy, and crushing their currency. So now contracts mean something? You don’t cancel major countries like you do individuals in the West or small powerless countries. Biden is using Tik Tok against Putin. The Biden Administration is living in a fantasy world.

We have stumbled into a new Cold War. No one seems to care or notice. It is a profound development that will alter the geopolitical landscape for decades to come. The Law of Unintended Consequences portends bad news for all of us.

You are trying to make moral equivalency between a violent home invasion and someone stealing at a convenience store.

The U.S word is pretty much worthless. Even worst when talking 5 years out. What if someone to the left of Lieden is elected in 2024? What of Trump gets in and decides to play hardball with the Europeans who are currently eating u.s for lunch on trade? You don’t give away your star player for draft picks to be named later.

They’ll simply use third parties to route the money in the way that Putin demands, they have no choice.

They’re plenty of violent “home invasions”. How many of them do you react to? If someone stole directly from you I suspect that would get a harsher reaction from you than a woman being gang raped in India. Of course as a thought debate you will disagree but in reality you know it’s true.

Russia’s also got the leverage of being a diesel supplier now that Spring is here and diesel-powered farm equipment will be needed for planting.

Germany’s already talking about rationing diesel fuel.

Trump was laughed at for warning the same people about the dangers of relying on Russian gas.

Then again, at the time, it wasn't generally known that "the steal" was in play to install Biden, who shut down the lever which the US could have used to counter. Funny how that works.
