My system produced 55% of my power last year in my all electric two-story house. But all the variables are right for me. I’m in the south with lots of sun and most of my power consumption is for A/C in the summer — when I get even more sun. No shade on my roof. My variable speed heat pump rarely draws more than 1kW power (meaning my 9kW inverter has 8kW left it can do to power other appliances before pulling from the grid). The same for my hybrid water heater drawing low power to slowly reheat my water tank with just my wife and I living together. I like it so much I’m doubting my solar panels and inverter and tripling my battery storage and getting an EV.
I’m not saying solar is great for everyone. I’m saying don’t diss it automatically. If you do a deep dive research on your situation it may work for you and give your monthly budget the same freedom from Dim control freak energy policy chaos that I’ve experienced the past year.
