We’re in the middle of two weeks of radiation prevention after our cat’s I-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism. She’s “leaking” radiation from her body, so each of us can only touch her for 30 minutes a day. I figure that I’ve had so many x-rays in my life that I’m “hot” (in a bad way) anyhow.

I went through that a few years ago w/ my siamese. Amazing procedure actually. He came out (at age 16) in great shape.

My fingers would start to tingle if I spent too much time around him.

I131 is exponentially more dangerous if ingested due to the beta particle it throws off. Wash your hands after touching the cat or handling its litter box.

Radioactive material “leaks,” not radiation. I like cats.

No, you are not. X-rays do NOT make a person radioactive...the only thing that does that is to have an actively radioactive isotope present in your body (which your cat does). Once that isotope decays away or is excreted, your cat will be quite non-"hot". (Note...I did my dissertation minor in Nuclear Chemistry, so I know this stuff).
