FR is a forum for conservatives (traditionalists, free marketers, libertarians, populists, etc.).

Yes, FR is a news source and "conservative" debate forum - I love that format. But I've noticed that few people seem to know how to have a substantive debate in good faith. WAY too often the disagreement is taken down to personal affront and attack - bye bye coherent debate.

I love participating in an informed and substantive debate done with good-faith participants. I think part of the reason for the absence of sound debate is that people are no longer taught how to learn. They're given dogma and told that's it. Another reason I think is that too many on the Right are not comfortable or confident in their position and feel threatened when challenged to explain their position.

I guess I'm pretty confident in my political and spiritual positions so I invite good-faith debate because 1) it's an opportunity to promote the rationale of what's true, 2) an opportunity to expose lies, 3) onlookers can learn, and 4) I flat-out enjoy it.

Since when did this forum become a place to cancel differing opinions?

Dunno. You may have launched your comments a bit strong sounding a bit like the mindless "Never-Trumpers" that come along.

FR is now picking sides and favoring one over the other.

I don't have a problem with that as long as FR allows differing viewpoints. The problem FR encounters is people in disagreement are often there to disrupt, not to debate in good faith. I think it's hard sometimes for the mods to always tell who's a disrupter and who's actually contributing something affirmative to the discussion.

Obviously you like DeSantis. If you'll notice I gave you why I think non-politician Trump is better for us than DeSantis. So I'm willing to continue the discussion if you're willing to continue in good faith, stay on topic, and not descend into personal attacks.

However, if you are one of those dogmatic and prejudiced “Never Trumpers” I’m not interested.

No im not a never Trumper. I voted for him twice & I will again if he is the nominee. Ive stated exactly that about a hundred times in the last few years. I am neither an establishmentarian, a moderate or a half in libertarian. I am a card carrying right winger & a full blown conservative across the board on all issues.
My parents were ex military and daddy served in Vietnam. I spent 8 years as an Army wife before my husband was severely injured in Afghanistan and medically retired. We spent 2 years at Walter Reed Hospital while he recovered, but moved to Tennessee because we couldnt deal with Maryland or D.C.
We are pro life, pro faith, pro traditionalism, small government, no welfare, less immigration, no illegals, second amenment, free speech, no litter, small town American conservatives who favor the American worker. Thats the way my parents raised me. My husband is the same. Im still young but have strongly resisted the tendency of so many to liberalize
Ive never been a big fan of change. Of things are going to change, I prefer it be measured and slow, preserving the past as best possible. The last 20 years have seen revolution- not liberalism. I oppose that movement like crazy. Its irrational and against my values.
That said, I am now 40 and am finally viewing the world confident in myself and my values. I love President Trump and would gladly vote for him a third time, but I cant pretend that I think he has the best shot at winning. This nation is sooooo far down a rabbit hole that I dont think we can risk future elections. My instinct is to go with the guy closest to my conservative values that I feel stands the best shot at winning the election.
Every person goes into a political race with their own baggage. Trump had some too. What I had hoped to see our of him was learning from the past two elections, tamping down the less palatable stuff and running with his strengths. He gets bogged down in stupid, petty arguments and doesnt showcase his best qualities. Because of that, I feel DeSantis has a real shot to excel.
When I try and have an honest discussion about that here, I literally hit a wall of opposition. Honestly, the first thing I get hit with is “Never Trumper”, “John McCain type”, “Establishmentarian”. It gets old! My biggest priority is making sure ill of the conservative things we believe in triumph amongst a majority of the populace and at the ballot box. Its about far more to me than just one man.
Everyone in this site would do better to build bridges with fellow conservatives, listen to concerns and build a coalition instead of insulting and shouting others down. You may not want to see it but the most argumentative and insulting people on here are they Only Trumpers. If you voice any concern, they play tag team insulting you, calling you stupid and getting you removed. Unfortunately, FR allows it to happen.
Its not going to make me quit, but it does get old! I’d appreciate a little more debate, a little less cult of personality and for everyone to be able to talk without being shouted down. Itd be nice of FR remembered that its ultimately about conservatism, not just Trump 😉
