An array of Alaska politicians ponder bids in the “absolute jungle” of elections to replace U.S. Rep. Don Young

One week ago, the race for Alaska’s sole seat in Congress was shaping up as a sleepy contest between long-serving incumbent Republican Don Young, conservative challenger Nick Begich III and a Democrat, Chris Constant.

Now, Young is set to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol next week. And an array of Alaskans are lining up as potential candidates to replace him.

Republican former Gov. Sarah Palin, Anchorage Democratic Rep. Chris Tuck, Native leader Tara Sweeney and attorney and gardening writer Jeff Lowenfels all say they’re weighing a bid for Alaska’s U.S. House seat. Independent Al Gross, who ran an unsuccessful $20 million campaign for U.S. Senate in 2020, is also said to be running, along with Anchorage Republican Sen. Josh Revak.

Young’s death last week, plus Alaska’s new system of open primaries and a ranked choice vote in the general election, “makes it a whole new world,” Tuck said in a phone interview Friday.

Palin is due for vindication after the way she has been abused in the press - glad to see her have a shot. Begich would have been my choice, but whomever, after this is secured - get to work replacing Murkowski.

Loved her as Gov. AK and as veep candidate—had someone else been running that campaign we could have been a heartbeat away from a great President. All the baggage the media claimed against her was the media, and alas Team McCain, invented. However the subsequent sad family baggage via the kids, and her divorce came via Team Palins. And although it would enhance her resume on the other side it’s an anchor on her side. She can usefully support another Standard Bearer but as that herself she’d be hard to drag across the line. Especially in this shortened election. If she wants to reenter the public eye, which for her I’d hope meant her youngest was doing well and up to it, and the personal lives of herself and her older kids had stabilized, then she’d be better to reboot in a visible appointed position where she could reestablish her competence. Ambassador to UN? Her style could shine and her baggage would shrink by comparison there. Then run on that record.

I’ve been longing to see her back. Best Governor I ever seen up here, but Begich seems to have some support from Repub establishment (good ole boy network). I doubt Begich will get 50% so who knows?

I’d say Young had the establishment vote. Begich was the up and comer. But yeah, the good old boys would probably not want Palin back at all.
I think Begich will be good. Hope he makes it thru and wins.

I totally agree. The media hype to make her out to be an air head has been dispelled timer and time again.
If she runs to replace Congressman Young, she has a good shot.
I believe she’ll be a firebrand in Congress and that’s what we need.
