What that means is that when black students are expelled at “disproportionately” high rates it is because black students offend at “disproportionately” high rates.

Does the WAPO present evidence (or even claim) that “cadets of color” are being framed by racists as a means of “ethnic cleansing” of the student body? If not, the alumni should demand that strict requirements be continued — or no more donations.
My wife and I dine with 1953 graduated and this whole thing is so hurtful to him. He used to give large amounts of money to the school but those days have stopped.
I believe this is a leftover from former Governor Northam, DemonRat, & VMI grad. His nickname in the yearbook was “Coonman” so the hypocrisy is more than ‘thick’.
The problem is that VMI obtains state funding, and so it's subject to state "anti-discrimination" rules. If VMI doesn't cave, it loses state funding.
It is racist for saying Blacks cannot be expected to act as civilized folks.
Had a friend who attended VMI. He unfortunately died in a car accident going to a sporting event when he was a freshman. The bonds were so close among the cadets that years after his death his mother was sent a class ring from members of the class he would have graduated from.
So there you have it; the school needs students for tuition regardless of their lack of honor.

I'm sure VMI could find many qualified students without lowering their standards. But at the expense of "diversity, equity and inclusion." And that would open them up to legal problems.

If VMI can’t survive without taxpayer money then it should close. The government’s primary motivation in anything it funds is a headlong pursuit of mediocrity, which seems to fly in the face of everything an institution like VMI is supposed to stand for.
Or is a candidate's criminal record (or grades, for that matter) of no importance when deciding that an applicant is fully qualified for admission as a cadet?
My guess is different standards for different groups.
But we're not racists. No whey.
